“Trials testing an experimental medication have been urgently halted following the death of multiple participants. Swiss drug manufacturer Novartis said Tuesday that it paused eight clinical trials of the cell therapy rap-cel after the deaths of three patients. The halt began on August 24 after Novartis was notified of three cases of a rare but life-threatening allergic reaction called immune effector cell-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (IEC-HS), the company spokesperson said.”

If you try to make a tumor vaccine using an immune modulator combined with tumor cells, the immune response generated may also be directed aagainst healthy tissue. Tumor antigens may have a great degree of commonality with healthy tissue.Looks like what happened here. Good luck trying to isolate or harvest unique tumor antigens.

Well, duhhh, anyone with half a brain would know this type of drug would lead to immune effector cell-associated hemophagocytic syndrome. I learned that in Kindergarten.

These medical researchers should have known better, but all they concentrate on now in medical schools is woke horse shit. I’ve noticed that some new physicians I’ve been around can’t even diagnose pneumonia using a stethoscope!
The three ex-patients certainly are.
Just list death as a possible side effect.

It was a trial to treat auto-immune diseases. They had engineered Car-T cells to attack the “rouge” immune cells which were attacking normal tissue. Some of the diseases in the studies were lupus,rheumatoid arthritis,vasculitis. Car-T cells therapy can cause too many cytokines to be released. It is a well known side effect.
Novartis is continuing to try Car-T therapy versus cancer.
Not sure it is a good idea to use engineered immune cells to attack other immune cells. Like civil war in the immune system. The immune system is an amazingly constructed and functional entity, with lots of feedback loops. So upsetting its balance in an already “rogue” immune condition can probably cause devastating unforeseen results.
Of course the next step is to demand everyone get this therapy. Or else.
