Former Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) Chief Financial Officer Heidi Beirich was arrested on Wednesday, with authorities alleging that she made secret payments to informants in white supremacist groups.

The Department of Justice brought charges against the SPLC earlier this year over fraudulent payments. Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed the arrest in a press conference.

Today is the anniversary of the Unite the Right rally of 2017. The event the media hyped as right wing (Nazi, KKK, enter other label) rabble rousers and falsely hung the 'fine people' statement on Trump.

Why would the SPLC paying informants be against Federal Law?

I find that organization is about as racist as you can get. I also think it’s hilarious that they have all of these do-gooder donators who have been supporting the people they supposedly hate.

But I can pay someone who is in an organization to tell me what is going on. You are not spying on the government. Or exposing undercover police operations.

Stupid people are gonna do stupid stuff. But is being stupid illegal?

They are a non-profit. They have to submit reports on what money is used for what.

It is alleged they lied on the reports about the informant pay-offs.

It may be they lied on forms to open bank accounts in federally licensed banks.

“Why would the SPLC paying informants be against Federal Law?”

I was wondering that, too.

It’s not like the federal government doesn’t enroll informants and undoubtedly find ways to compensate them.

Hmmm. That’s a tough one. I’ll take a stab at it: I’ll venture it’s because the governmental police agencies have legitimate need of informants in pursuit of their duties, and while specific payments to specific informants don’t appear on the books, payments to informants are a discernible line item in their budget. On the other hand, nonprofits dont have police powers, fabricating or inducing incidents in order to get more donations arent statutorily permissible actions under 501(c)(3), and nonprofits are obliged to keep honest books in which all categories of expenses must be disclosed, which these guys didn’t do. That would be my guess

So kind of like getting Capone on tax evasion? (in a way) Don’t get him on the big crime, nail him on failing to report.

"fabricating or inducing incidents"

Is also something law enforcement shouldn't be regularly doing either, even if its in a gray area, imho. The attempted Whitmer kidnapping comes to mind, or Operation Fast and Furious.

I would make the argument that the actions of the SPLC weren't just fraudulent, but (in the case of Charlottesville) seditious.

How is that similar to the issue at hand? They charged him with him offenses he had actually committed on which they could convict beyond a reasonable doubt, because he was too successfully insulated from evidence that he directly ordered or participated in murders. How is that similar to use of informants?

Paying informants isn't illegal per se; however, SPLC claims to be a charity and applied for and received a tax exemption under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. SPLC not only violated the Internal Revenue Code by engaging in political activity, but committed fraud by covering it up.

Thanks for that. I was trying to figure out where they went “illegal.” That makes sense.

are they paying for “informants” or paying to support the small band of miscreants that they are fund raising off of.

Don’t know if they’ll be able to convict her, but pretty soon Heidi Beirich will morph into Heidi Beipoor.
