Sen. Josh Hawley Grills Dr. Anthony Fauci: "Nothing says honesty like taking the Fifth!"

Senator Holling. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

Well, nothing says honesty like taking the fifth, huh, Doc?

Let's try something. What day of the week is it today?

On the advice of council, I respectfully declined to answer based upon my rights under the fifth amendment to the Constitution.

What color tie are you wearing?

On the advice of council, I respectfully decline to answer based upon my rights under the fifth amendment to the constitution.

What color is the carpet in front of you?

On the advice of council, I respectfully declined to answer based upon my rights under the fifth amendment to the constitution.

Let's just get one thing straight. You don't have any rights under the fifth amendment because you've been pardoned, as you very well know, as the Supreme Court has been clear for a century and more. Brown versus Walker, 1896. When he has been pardoned, he may not stand upon his privilege. You know that. Your lawyers sitting behind you now shifting nervously in their chairs. They know it. This isn't about the Constitution. This isn't about the law. This is about contempt. Contempt for this body and contempt for the American people. But I think I know why you're doing it. It's because you don't want to answer questions. It's because you did all kinds of terrible things. It's because during the pandemic, you got rich, didn't you? You got rich while people were dying. Hundreds of thousands of Americans, over a million in the end, and you were getting rich. And not only were you doing that, you were using federal employees with taxpayer money to apply for and solicit cash prizes for you personally. Cash prizes totaling over a million dollars. You did all of that during the pandemic, didn't you? That's a question.

On the advice of council, I respectfully declined to answer based upon my rights under the fifth amendment to the constitution.

Agree

A pardoned doesn’t rewrite history.

That’s mean to MAFIA; at least they had/have some semblance of honor. Fauci ... UGH. What I knew about him before was disgusting. Then today when it was exposed that he sought out cash prizes from various organizations, and had his staff help him. While people were DYING all over the country.

Ooooooh burn, it burns!!!!!!!

Hawley absolutely ROASTED Fauci for nine minutes straight, finally telling him he’s done the most to damage science in his (Hawley’s) lifetime, and then ended with “I hope you go home and write that down in your diary.”

That was one heck of an ass-kicking Hawley inflicted on Fauci. Low information voters watching may actually have felt sorry for the guy.

He kept a diary of his crimes on a government computer. Untouchable arrogance.

I had to look up what that 1896 ruling meant: "Brown versus Walker, 1896. When he has been pardoned, he may not stand upon his privilege."

Explained to me like I'm a six yearold:

Okay, let’s pretend we’re talking about cookies and rules at school, okay? Imagine you took a cookie from the jar when you weren’t supposed to. That’s the “bad thing.” Then the principal says, “I forgive you. You’re not in trouble anymore.” That’s the pardon — like a big official “I forgive you.” After that, you can’t say, “I don’t have to tell what happened because I have a special right to stay quiet.” Why? Because the principal already said you’re not in trouble. So the special “stay-quiet” protection is gone. You have to answer the questions now. That’s what the quote means: Once someone has been forgiven (pardoned), they can’t use their special “I don’t have to talk” privilege anymore.
