The union representing thousands of baristas at Starbucks has bailed on its attempt to bring employees at the Pike Place Market coffeehouse into its fold.
...
The coffeehouse’s baristas filed for union election on April 3, according to Workers United. At the time, barista Nailah Diaz pointed to “unfair treatment and operational issues without the support needed to succeed.”
Not every employee at the Pike Place store agreed.
Barista Derika Muna, 27, told The Seattle Times on Tuesday that she unknowingly went to a union organizing meeting at the behest of a co-worker, believing it to be a casual meetup with friends.
When union authorization cards were presented to employees, “I pretended to sign because I did not feel comfortable saying no in the moment,” she said.

Gen Z supports “workers rights” but not if it costs them money.
I just saw a news story about the CEO of Starbucks defending a $9 cup of coffee. He said it was a “premium experience”. More like the unions threaten to price them out of existence.
Im still trying to wrap my head around people that make coffee being unionized.
Call me old fashioned but I always thought it took being skilled labor that was not easily replaceable to have an effective union.
I wouldn’t think it would be too awfully difficult to replace coffee makers....I mean, how difficult could it be?....regardless of what kind of fancy title they assign themselves.
Sorry, I just don’t get it.
barista Nailah Diaz pointed to “unfair treatment “
No doubt the little snowflake was shackled and beaten.
Or maybe they’d rather represent themselves than turn over their rights to a union.
“barista”......what an EFFING joke.
These people make coffee for gosh sakes....hanging some fancy bame on it doesn’t make it any more complicated.
At the end of the day a “sanitation engineer” is still a garbage man.
Sheesh
With only a few exceptions, I believe everyone has the right to join a union. It’s a free country.
But here’s the problem. It’s no longer a level playing field. It’s now tilled in favor of the unions. For example, many states now make it illegal to permanently replace striking workers.
And so unskilled, striking Starbucks workers know they will eventually get their jobs back. That’s more incentive to go on strike.
So 16 cups in a gallon, 16 X $9 =
And people complain about $5 a gallon gas.
“many states now make it illegal to permanently replace striking workers”
Blue states no doubt.
That right there is freaking UN-American.
I do believe in private enterprise unions also, but do not believe in Public Sector unions.
Maybe a few of the smarter ones convinced the radicals that unionizing would put them out of a job.
I know of no one that makes “coffee runs” any longer, it has become too expensive.
Went to Starbucks for the first time in a year b/c I had money left on a Starbuck’s gift card.
One small drink came to $6.25. So no, never again.
I can make far better coffee at home.
Seattle is Vacant. Literally Everything is Gone.
Most downtown Seattle businesses are GONE because of leftist rule.
Starbucks
Old Navy
The Loft
And many more. GONE.
They left because of crime and homelessness & now most of downtown Seattle is VACANT. How SAD.
> “many states now make it illegal to permanently replace striking workers”
Blue states no doubt. <
And to make matters worse, most of those states are “closed shop” - meaning that if a company has a union, you MUST join the union as a condition of employment.
That’s anti-American as well.
Those states were closed shop for public unions as well. But the Supreme Court struck that requirement down back in 2018.
Disclaimer: I’m probably slightly pro-union in general. But as I said, it has to be a level playing field. Both sides must have considerable freedom. Not just one side.
I prefer the experience of enjoying coffee in my own home in my favorite chair for 1/20th the price. No travel, no fuel, no blue hairs, no waiting.
No, not even historically. There have always been unions that represent unskilled/low-skilled labor. For awhile, that was part of the disagreement between the AFL and the CIO. AFL was all craft, while the CIO was more industrial and included some unskilled/low-skilled workers. There are plenty of modern locals that have unskilled/low skilled labor.
I wouldn’t think it would be too awfully difficult to replace coffee makers....I mean, how difficult could it be?....regardless of what kind of fancy title they assign themselves.
I don't buy that crap myself, but from what I understand, they are more akin to bartenders given the different variations they make on everything. Still...it doesn't take a ton to train a replacement.
The problem is that their clientele leans left, so any effort to permanently replace strikers may backfire on the business. I suspect a some of them just close after getting unionized.
It all started 35 years ago in CA with a group called “Janitors for Justice”
They did a shakedown of high tech companies to unionize janitors.
When Silicon Valley capitulated, the group became “SEIU”, still using the same shakedown methods.
Its all about power for the DNC and has very little to do with “workers rights”
Paper or plastic?
Bagging, courtesy clerk, and checker roles at major corporate chains fall under comprehensive master labor agreements.
Every Seattle Starbucks location whose employees voted to unionize is closing; Starbucks will have nothing of their communism.
