After Trump-Pope Leo spat, maybe it's Christians who need to be the peacemakers between these two belligerents

There's no lack of blame to go around for the overnight spat between Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, and President Trump doing his late-night tweets.

Following the heavily advertised 60 Minutes segment featuring the pope's three closest and wokest U.S. cardinals repeating their criticisms of Trump's Iran actions and work restoring U.S. immigration law, Trump put out these intemperate tweets:

B R E A K I N G 🅱️

President Trump SLAMS Pope Leo for catering to woke radical leftists..

The president posted this not long after attacking the Pope: pic.twitter.com/RlRhO63ZCo

He called Pope Leo "weak on crime," which he hasn't commented on, and "terrible on foreign policy" which it can be argued, is correct, given the scope of the threat from Iran, whose missiles reached Europe a few weeks ago and which brutally bombed many of its non-combatant neighbors.

Then he brought up the Church's COVID response in the U.S., which, while it was indeed bad, was irrelevant, given that Pope Leo was not pope at the time and even if he were, would not have had anything to do with it.

He unwisely brought up the pope's brother, Louis, probably with good intentions as he likes the man, who is now going to get a flood of reporter phone calls goading him to choose between his love for his brother and his love for Trump, which is unfair to him.

Then he went into 'not wanting a pope' who opposed many different aspects of his foreign policy almost as if he had a vote at the conclave. For better or worse, we all get the pope we get.

Then he got into worst of his tweet, arguing that Pope Leo was only elected to Get Trump and if there were no Trump, there would be no Pope Leo, so I guess Leo was supposed to be grateful or something. It repeated the claim by lefty Vatican freelancer Christopher Hale who said he believes Pope Leo was specificly chosen to take down Trump. That was picked up by Liz Cheney, who bounced it around Washington, until Cardinal Robert McElroy, who voted in the conclave and witnessed the whole thing firsthand disabused her of the nonsense.

The last part of his tweet, about Pope Leo meeting with Obama strategist and partisan political operative David Axelrod, and of that being a bad idea, was perfectly true, if bluntly said. A lot of us would like to know what that was about.

After that, he tweeted a Jesus-like photo of himself that probably wasn't meant that way, but which was taken that way, in a mistake he could have avoided.

As for Leo....

Pope Leo said he wasn’t afraid of the Trump administration, which was an obnoxious statement right out the gate, given that Trump never threatened him. It’s awfully easy to not be afraid of someone who isn’t threatening you. It’s also a bona fide Democrat talking point to falsely claim that Trump is making threats.

Many Republicans see the hand of Axelrod clearly in that opener. One wonders if he coached the pope how to frame Trump in such talking points to bolster the Democrat narrative.

Pope Leo also said he wasn’t a politician, which is true enough, but left out that he nevertheless likes to politick, which is hardly mutually exclusive from preaching the Gospel as he said he was about. He obviously thinks he’s Gospel-informed as he makes his peace statements, which actually, is expected of him, but his other acts have gone way beyond what previous popes have done and extended into domestic meddling.

He waded into U.S. politics by urging Catholics to phone their leaders to complain about President Trump’s acts in Iran. Presumably, he also wanted Iranians to call up their local mullahs and tell them to stop fighting. I wonder how that would work out for them. We all know the thrust of his statement was U.S. politics.

My northern European ancestors fought wars that lasted centuries against the bloody popes in Italy. The pope is nothing but a jumped up priest. Maybe the pope should give us the same courtesy he gives the Muslims, he can kiss our backside.

The commie pope isn’t Catholic.

Nobody asked and nobody cares but I’m with Trump 100% on this. Leo is out of his lane.

I’ll take Trump over Leo every day. I don’t need someone telling me about their version of the Bible and God’s word. I can read. I need someone who wants us as a country and culture to survive what’s coming and some of that is pushed by Leo.

Wonder why a Nation that began with 13 Colonies, as Christ and His 12 began, and grew to 50 states, as the New Covenant Church grew at 50, could get into such a sad, sick state...

Maybe it was to be a witness to clowns in places like Rome.

Since Iran has (or had) numerous nuclear capable missiles and was within about six weeks of enriching enough ot its uraniumm to build about 11 bombs, Pope Leo should have rightly called Trump “Savior of the Faith,” the Vatican being within about six weeksof getting nuked. Anyone here who doesn’t believe that just needs to remember that Islamists view the RC Church as a “poltheistic idoltarous sect” that fundamentally opposes Islam. Indeed, it has also stood over the centuries as Western Civilization’s greatest defender against the depradations of Islam.

Can't argue with that. I shall now refer to Prevost as Bergoglio II. Both heretics and minions of Satan.

Until Leo starts paying taxes in the U.S., he needs to stay out of U.S. politics. I don’t think people would approve of Leo joining the far left Trump haters and rioters. He can’t let TDS rule over him and his actions.

For quite a while now I have treated my Catholic faith as something separate from the Catholic Church. The Church lost it's way a long time ago having been influenced and taken over by evil pedophiles and homosexuals.

I was raised a Roman Catholic but have been non-practicing my entire adult life. Reason being because I was raised by nuns in an all-girls boarding school. I saw up close and personal how awful the nuns were. They stole allowance money from the children. One of them stole my family bible and allowed my father to think I lost it. They used physical "punishment." Had the older girls do most of the cleaning in the whole convent. Ran the place using prison-like methods. Even refused to call children by their given names, but always used last names which went toward robbing children of their identities. If a child's last name was long, the nuns would cut it in half which further dehumanized the child.

I know with absolute clarity that this pope is an American leftist through and through. Why should any pope who supposedly is a disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ live in incredibly wealthy splendor when Jesus lived with simplicity and near poverty?

The Pope is not a “jumped up priest”. The Pope is a “jumped up Bishop”. In the Catholic Church there are two basic ecclesiastical ranks, Priest and Bishop. Cardinals are higher ranking Bishops, and the Pope is actually the Bishop of Rome.

All that said, the Pope is perfectly in his right to make any political statement he thinks is righteous and moral. The US President is perfectly in his right to respond as he choses.

Frankly, it’s good to put the debate out in the public, where we can all see it and chose our own side.
