[HONG KONG/TOKYO] TCL Electronics Holdings agreed to buy a majority stake in Sony Group’s global home entertainment business as the Chinese company seeks to expand overseas.
TCL will pay 75.4 billion yen (S$610 million) for a 51 per cent stake in a new joint venture that will hold Sony’s home entertainment business including Bravia televisions, according to a statement on Tuesday (Mar 31), which confirmed an earlier Bloomberg News report.
Sony will retain a 49 per cent stake in the business, which also include research and development, design, manufacturing and product sales, as well as home audio equipment.
As part of the strategic partnership, TCL will also buy manufacturing subsidiary Sony EMCS (Malaysia) Sdn, or SOEM, according to the statement. TCL will continue to negotiate a potential purchase of all or part of Sony’s Chinese manufacturing business Shanghai Suoguang Visual Products, known as SSVE.

Looks like Sony is slowly getting out of the electronics business and focusing on its intellectual property assets (movies, television, music).
Which is kind of ironic because for many years, they lost money on the movie side of their business.
In December 2025, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against TCL and four other smart TV manufacturers, alleging that the companies were illegally “spying on Texans by secretly recording what consumers watch in their own homes” using automated content recognition (ACR) technology.
I think Sony realized there really a lot of money to be made in hardware and that growth is limited. They still have a toehold at least.
Sony probably needs money to buy more music and video assets. According to Wikipedia publishes the largest quantity of music with over six miliion songs owned or administered. It bought Miranda Lambert’s catalog at the end of January.
Warner Bros just sold for $111 billion.
Looks like Sony is going to focus on being an entertainment company; video games, music and movies, etc.
So between this and Chinese company TenCent having a majority stake in most video game companies in the US. How much propaganda are we getting here?
The 51% of television set business is being sold. I can see where that can direct consumers to watch certain things and gather information about consumers.
