The number of Americans claiming asylum in Canada has jumped dramatically, as voters who dislike Donald Trump and his policies flee north of the border.
In 2025, there were 1,850 asylum applications for Americans seeking to move to Canada - more than double the 700 in 2024, the year Trump won his second presidential election.
Immigration data, viewed by the Daily Mail, shows that US asylum claims are approaching figures not seen since Trump's last term, with a record 2,535 applying for asylum in 2017, at the height of the anti-Trump 'Resistance' movement.
Prior to Trump taking office in 2017, the number of Americans seeking asylum in Canada was only a few hundred each year, but surged into the four figures after the election of the MAGA president.
The first full year of Democrat President Joe Biden's term in office - 2022 - saw 1,140 Americans seeking asylum in Canada.
Numbers then fell sharply, to between 300 and 700 a year for the remainder of Biden's single term in office.
Ryan Rosenberg, a managing partner in Canadian firm Larlee Rosenberg, said he has seen a definite increase in immigration inquiries from Americans since Trump took the White House in 2016 and 2024.
'We definitely saw a massive spike in business,' Rosenberg told the Daily Mail. But this time, he said, the law firm saw inquiries from a 'much wider range of Americans.'

Lots and lots of boring detail, but cross-border movement is a jumble of permanent residency, permanent immigration, and population stock changes. Data sources differ (US Yearbook of Immigration Statistics vs. Statistics Canada Longitudinal Immigration Database and censuses), and many cross-border moves are temporary or circular due to NAFTA/USMCA, dual citizenship options, and easy travel.
BOTTOM LINE: 1) Net international migration for both countries is dominated by inflows from other regions, not each other. 2) Canada-to-US flows are generally larger (especially in broader emigration measures), but both are modest in scale relative to each country's total population and immigration programs.

I researched getting a home in Nova Scotia in or near Halifax. I found that the residency rules de jure and de factowere very strict unless you are from sub-Saharan Africa, Haiti, China, or India.
I have recently come to the conclusion that before Trump leaves office, he should setup a political asylum system that allows in Canadians and Western Europeans who fear for their safety from losing the free speech rights and the violence from Muslims that is allowed to happen.
Just like Obama flooded cities with Somalians and other 3rd world Muslims, Trump could flood the cities with middle of the road to conservative white Canadians and Western Europeans.
