A bipartisan pair of US senators is set to unveil the “Block Putin” act this week targeting Hungarian officials with sanctions over Budapest’s veto of a key EU aid package for Kyiv and its continued purchases of Russian energy.
In March, Budapest vetoed a previously agreed €90 billion ($104 billion) vital aid package for Kyiv, citing a long-running dispute with Ukraine over Russian oil transit.
If passed, the US bill would impose financial sanctions and visa bans on Hungarian officials involved in Russian oil purchases, though it does not name pro-Kremlin Hungarian leader Viktor Orban, leaving it to the Trump administration to decide whom to target.
Both have spoken against Europe’s continuous reliance on Russian energy despite Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, according to the FT. Tillis said the bill aims to pressure Budapest to stop buying Russian oil and obstructing Europe’s support for Kyiv.
“The United States and our allies must remain united in supporting Ukraine and in cutting off the revenue streams that fuel Putin’s war,” Tillis said.
“This bill holds senior Hungarian officials accountable while giving Hungary a clear path to get back in line with its allies by ending its reliance on Russian energy and stopping its obstruction of support for Ukraine.”

“US sanctions on an EU member, even more entertaining, on a NATO country....! Hillarious.....the EU and NATO coming apart, as forecasted.”
In 2006 You forecasted that the US would break up into four new countries in 2006.
You are one lousy forecaster.
But if Ukraine doesn’t get the aid, Democrats won’t get their campaign funds. The graft must flow!
“Hungary should be commended for its actions!”

Orbán is acting like a delinquent. He stands alone in the EU in defying Trump’s demand that European countries stop buying Russian oil. And yet, some people argue he should be praised for opposing Trump on that? That makes no sense to me.
He is also one of the biggest grifters in the EU, effectively behaving like a socialist heavily dependent on massive EU subsidies. Without the financial support Hungary receives from the EU, its economy would sink to a point of no return.
At the same time, he is allowing China to erode Hungary’s independence, making the country increasingly dependent on Beijing. His government also appeases a neo-Soviet Russia and aligns itself with socialist regimes hostile to European stability.
There are even strong allegations that members of his government have recently shared confidential EU discussions with the Kremlin. That would amount to a serious breach of trust—arguably even treasonous behavior.
Hungary’s economy is among the weakest in Europe, and much of the responsibility lies with Orbán’s leadership.
The only area where Hungary appears to perform relatively well is in its strict immigration policies. Beyond that, the overall picture is deeply concerning. Without continued and substantial EU support, Hungary could risk becoming a failed state.
And Third World immigration is the only issue that's actually an existential threat to European countries. And furthermore, Orban is the only European head of state to do anything about it. If he goes, he'll be replaced with a Eurocrat who welcomes Arab and African sludge into the country.
That's a much more important issue than being willing to dish out some more Euros every time Zelensky comes by to rattle his coffee can.
“You can cut the man down all you want- “
I didn’t mention any man or any ECM.
I just said you were a lousy forcaster.
Trump has endorsed Orban. He would veto this BS Crappola if passed(it won’t).. God Bless Hungary for vetoing this loan.We need more like him.
RINO warmonger skank Tillis is evil.
Like Murk Tillis opposes Voter ID
It is interesting that Russia just happened to hit the pipeline in Ukraine carrying oil to Hungary during a recent missile/drone attacks. Both Russia’s leadership and our own need to have good reasons for doing and saying things that might not work out, or even be true. There certainly seems to be a lot happening now that just does not seem to be working out as explained, or even as planned.
Just one more oddity to induce into the question, “In what universe are the above actions, as a collective, coherent in any sense of the word?
