NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Former New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson, who was arrested last month for allegedly embezzling $85,500 from public funds, is due in court Thursday.

Jacobson faces two counts of first-degree larceny.

He abruptly retired on Jan. 5, hours after three assistant police chiefs confronted him about the missing funds from the police department’s confidential informant fund.

He is wishing he created learing centers or hospice centers right now. At least he would be going to jail for millions stolen.

Too many funds to keep track of it seems. Time to zero ‘em all out.

It showed that Jacobson had bet $4,464,884.26 and saw a net loss of $214,365.74 from Jan. 1, 2025, to Jan. 5, 2026, on DraftKings and FanDuel.

A police chief bet $4.4 million dollars. That is staggering. Its amazing that he did not steal more than $85,000 if he is betting that much. He clearly is a gambling addict with an out-of-control gambling problem. While I don't mean to shift blame from Jacobson, there is all kinds of evidence that the massive push for online betting and marketing of sites like Draft Kings and FanDuel have resulted in a massive increase in gambling addiction and massive financial losses related to it. And crimes by addicts to support their habit.

When you are a police chief who is not allowed to do his job you might use your work time embezzling money from the public. It sure beats watching “Da View” and eating donuts and bon bons all day.

My husband was a counselor with several advanced degrees - his focus and specialty was addiction, he spent his entire life researching, studying and writing about it.

He told me the hardest addiction to break is gambling - worse than heroin, speed, oxycontin, etc.

A long stint in jail will stop the chief’s addition - at least temporarily.

Gambling is out of control in America, and youth are getting caught up in it, and some are losing everything. DraftKings, etc started it, but PolyMarket and Kalshi are putting it on a whole other level, allowing bets on literally anything.

Here are two articles illustrating this:

I’m a College Student. Gen Z Sports Betting Is Wrecking My Friends’ Lives

Gamblers trying to win a bet on Polymarket are vowing to kill me if I don’t rewrite an Iran missile story
