The U.S. Department of Transportation is proposing a ban on traffic safety cameras in Washington, D.C.

The move could impact public safety programs and cost the District millions in revenue.

D.C. leaders and advocates are pushing back, calling the proposal federal overreach.

The proposal would outlaw speed, red light and stop sign cameras throughout the city as part of the upcoming surface transportation bill, which Congress is aiming to pass this year.

There are tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions, of speed camera photos of vehicles exceeding the speed limit by a certain threshold (in DC, it's 5mph).

Yet they have not captured one picture of an accident.

If these images were used as data for a scientific experiment, you could only conclude that the "speeding" detected is 100% safe.

Use Dem logic. Declare the cameras racist with the offender stats—not too difficult to do in DC and MD—and the cameras are gone.

In Florida, decreased speed limits in school zones are in effect for about two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon when school is in session. A sign is flashing to let drivers know when this is happening.

In Maryland decreased speed limits in school zones are in effect 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Florida cares about safety for the children. Maryland cares about collecting money.

Those cameras have absolutely nothing to do with safety. It’s nothing more than a money grab. Pure and simple.

There’s one camera at an exit off of 50 in DC that’s particularly egregious. It’s just past the exit. The speed limit drops from 55 to 25 is about 50 feet.

That one camera brings in $13,000,000 in “safety” annually. And there’s no reason for that road to be 25 mph. 40 is a very reasonable speed limit there.

A hearty Huzzah to DOT.

Red light and speed cameras are not about safety, they’re about revenue generation. Always have been and always will be.

Government loves to put cameras all over to monitor We the People ... but when We the People bring out cameras to monitor the Government ... Government agents get all pissed off.

If they have nothing to hide, they nothing to fear.

Right?

It can be used for safety, however, its being used for revenue for tickets. It was accidentally admitted by the DC government many years ago.

"...calling the proposal federal overreach"

Nonsense!

By law, DC is a federally controlled city...
The current DC politicians need to be jailed and the city, once again, needs to be run by a congressionally appointed commissioner...
