Planned Parenthood shooting suspect Robert Dear dies in custody

Nov 25, 2025

DENVER (KDVR) — Robert Dear, the man accused of killing three people at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic nearly ten years ago has died in federal custody.

One police officer and two civilians were killed in the shooting at the clinic on Nov. 27, 2015. Dear had been accused in the shooting and charged both federally and at the state level, though judges have repeatedly found him incompetent to stand trial.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate lookup lists Dear as deceased and a source also confirmed his death to FOX31. According to Bureau of Prisons records, Dear died on Saturday, Nov. 22, but a cause of death is not listed.

The 67-year-old was being held in federal prison.

Five other police officers and four other people were injured in the shooting, and Dear was taken into custody that day after a long standoff.

Dear has multiple times been found incompetent to stand trial, though at an initial court hearing before then, he called himself “guilty” and a “warrior for the babies.”

After Dear’s prosecution bogged down in state court because he was repeatedly found to be mentally incompetent to stand trial, he was charged in federal court in 2019 under the 1994 Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. Federal judges also found him incompetent to stand trial for those charges as well.

I saw him on the news last night, but I had the sound turned down and didn't know what was going on.

This kind of incident did damage to the pro-life cause in the decades following Roe v. Wade - but I pray all involved that man as well as the loved ones of those whose lives were lost at the clinic - have found healing and grace.

He got what was coming to him. What he did was wrong and I am glad he spent his last years in jail.

I am anti-abortion, but I did not support this.

Indeed, because "pro-LIFE" means just that. LIFE.

The man in question was clearly not driven by the spirit of God.

I purposely do not call myself pro-life because I support the death penalty. I call myself anti-abortion because it makes it clear with crystal clear meaning exactly how I feel about abortion.

I believe that innocent babies should live and guilty murderers should die. This way, they can't use my words against me.

The man in question was clearly not driven by the spirit of God.

I agree. No he was not.

So this guy lived in a small camper in a flat wind swept part of Park County not that far from where we were living then. The ladies in the little cafe in Hartsell told us that he freaked them out when he would come in there. We got talking because one of them got really nervous because I was wearing an open 1911 when we sat down. The boss lady told her it was ok, and we chatted. His camper was just east of the cafe and the news had just happened about him and the locals were a little shook up that they knew him.

Why are Christians pro-life when it comes to abortion while at the same time in favor of the death penalty and supportive of war?

The primary problem with this question is that it attempts to create a moral equivalency between abortion, the death penalty / capital punishment, and war. There is absolutely nothing equivalent about an innocent baby’s life being taken in the womb and a convicted murderer being executed. A baby in the womb has committed no crime. The death penalty should be, and in most cases is, employed only with the most evil of crimes. It was God who ordained the death penalty (Genesis 9:6), and it is God who gives governments the authority to enforce the death penalty (Romans 13:1-7). It is entirely consistent to believe that the life of an innocent baby in the womb should be protected while believing that the perpetrators of the most heinous of crimes should be executed. ...
