One year ago, on a dark day for the Democratic party, 10 blue California counties flipped to Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
This morning, beleaguered Democrats who have been locked out of power for a year may be feeling some resolve. California’s vote to redistrict its congressional maps in favor of the Democrats marks a strong rebuke to President Donald Trump and offers hope for the party ahead of the 2026 midterms. Elsewhere, Democrats saw a wave of wins in a clean sweep of off-year elections, including in two gubernatorial races and the New York City mayoral race.
Buoyed by heavyweight support from the likes of former President Barack Obama and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50 won in a landslide on Tuesday, with “Yes” winning 63.8% of the vote, with around 75% of the vote counted.
“We stood tall and we stood firm in response to Donald Trump’s recklessness,” Newsom said on Tuesday night during a celebration speech squarely aimed at the president. “And tonight, after poking the bear, this bear roared.”
The unprecedented mid-decade gerrymandering wars were triggered when Texas decided to redraw its maps in the Republican’s favor in August, at the behest of Trump.
Outside of Texas and California, other states may pursue mid-decade redistricting, including deep-blue states like Illinois and Maryland, as well as red-leaning states such as Indiana.
The passing of Prop. 50 means newly drawn congressional district maps created by the state Legislature can be used for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 House elections in California, instead of the current maps drawn by the independent citizens’ commission. In short: Five more blue seats are likely in the House of Representatives for the 2026 midterms.

You are correct about that. There’s little point in distinguishing between DOJ threats (just like in the “preclearance” days) and court orders. It amounts to the same thing.
But still — good for the GOP for taking the opportunity to improve their situation in Texas. :-)
Even professional Democrat gerrymanderers like these guys:

...agree that the new districts are sufficiently compact and do not split geographic areas. They are of course unhappy that their party isn’t going to fare too well under the new map. But then look at all of the partisan Democrat gerrymanders which they consider to be “neutral”; IOW their biased opinions don’t carry much weight.
Are you living in CA permanently?
Prayers up, if so.
Great example of their ‘democracy’.
well with blanket mail in ballots mailed to every address in the state. vote by mail invites fraud duh
but you need to look at the total votes cast
imho …. stalin knew final count was in the counting. Additionally if count didn’t go the direction prescribed, there was alway radio and presently tv as plan B.
btw, I do vote in every election am legally entitled, although I do recognize and realize the futility. On several ballots, have voted for cartoon characters out of frustration.
Our votes are never private. Being told our votes are private is part of the propaganda. Our votes are shared with numerous NGOs. My votes are between God and me. I pray each time before voting that God’s will be done. All I’ve typed is my opinion. But in the end, I believe, God’s will shall be done. Have a great day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year Mark!!!
I am a big fan of prop 50. The sooner blue states are all blue and red all red the sooner we can have a secession and a divorce.
thanks for the thanksgiving, christmas and new years well wishes, riht back at you.
I have not tried the mickey mouse or any of the other cartoon ones, next time i might.
