Senate Republicans must agree to end the filibuster now, acting before Democrats potentially take control of the chamber and end the procedure themselves, Sen. Ron Johnson told Newsmax on Thursday, while agreeing with President Donald Trump.
Democrats, the Wisconsin Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America," have "no respect for the filibuster" and will eliminate it "to acquire and maintain power."
"I've always been a big supporter of the filibuster," Johnson said. "It has stopped America from going down a socialist path for decades."
Still, he said that Trump is right, and "I told him at this point in time that he's 100% correct."
"The Democrats purged the last two senators who held out and supported the filibuster," he said. "We know they have no respect for it. So we need to strike first."

it’s getting to the point where the pros of ending the filibuster are outweighing the cons. The left is crazy, you know they will end it themselves the first chance they get.
That’s about the first thing I’ve agreed with him on. But it will never happen with this gopE.
I am more inclined to agree it must be Republicans and Republicans only who reopen the government to put an end once and for all to this and throw it in the Dems’ faces - their constant, continuous lies that “Trump has shut down the government.”
It shouldn’t have to be this way - but it is the way Democrats have chosen to make it.
When given power, Democrats will use it ruthlessly.
When given power, Republicans react as if handed a poisonous snake.
Also, some Repubs head directly for their fainting couches.
Initially, I was against the idea of ending the filibuster. However, this is not the same Democrat party. This is the party of AOC and the squad. Once the Socialists have their foot in the door that’s it. I believe that they will vote to end the filibuster as soon as they get the chance and that will be it. In their minds, they are in the end game. They will do all they can to cement their power permanently. My concern is that the Republicans will end the filibuster only to pass a CR of Biden’s budget. If they are ending the filibuster, go big. Pass a Trump budget, write into law a line-item veto, dump Obamacare, rewrite the immigration laws, etc. Unfortunately, with some of the squishy Republicans in the Senate they will only end up killing the filibuster for some weak, watered down bills that won’t change anything.
Unfortunately, this seems to be correct.
1. Republicans must end the filibuster to thwart the Democrats before they will most certainly end it to thwart us.
2.If MAGA must rely on the filibuster to survive, rather than by winning honest elections, MAGA is dead anyway.
If Thune stands in the way, he needs to be driven from office.
The filibuster, a device invented to protect the rights of the minority, is a product of a different society than that in which we currently live. It was a product of a society in which there were lines that were not crossed, in which civility generally ruled, rather than the idea of winning at all costs. If there was a filibuster, then the majority had to come to the minority and give them at least something in order to reach that 60 vote threshold (which was originally 67).
However, we no longer live in that world. We know what the Democrats are capable of doing in order to obtain, maintain and grow their power over all of the rest of us. They know no restraint, and they will assuredly get rid of the filibuster if they get 51 votes and need to be able to pass some piece of legislation. To be honest, I’m not that worried about them doing anything of this sort soon, even if they somehow take control of the Senate in 2026. My concern is about a time in which they have control of the White House and both chambers of Congress. There is no doubt in my mind that they will definitely get rid of the filibuster in that circumstance, and they will use it to admit more states, and also to expand the size of the Supreme Court, among many other things intended only to cement their hold on power. These are desperate people, because they recognize that they have been found out. A majority, one that is growing as time passes, has realized that the Democrats stand for nothing other than simply gaining and wielding power. They are in favor of policies that endanger this country and cost people jobs, all for the sake of winning the votes of various constituencies. They just don’t give a damn about this country, and they face a permanent minority status if they can’t change the rules of the game.
I believe that President Trump and Senator Johnson want to eliminate the filibuster now, so that for the next three years we will be able to fix our system, and restore some of the rules that used to exist that safeguarded our republic. As an example, it would be absolutely impossible to pass a law in the current environment, and with the current rules, which required voters for federal offices to show ID proving their citizenship. It would be similarly impossible to pass legislation to largely eliminate mail-in voting, which is obviously a source of immense fraud in favor of the Democrats. Further, I don’t even know how funds would be able to be appropriated for a census before 2030, one which would exclude illegal aliens, and shift somewhere between 15 and 20 electoral votes toward red states. I was alive and politically aware 50 years ago, and it is my sincere belief that the vast majority of politicians and rank-and-file members of both parties would have been in favor of these measures at that time - which is precisely why they weren’t necessary. Again, these measures would simply restore safeguards that made sure that voting was done in a fair way, and only by people who were qualified to vote because they were citizens. Passing this kind of legislation, only possible with the elimination of the filibuster, would make the Democrat party a minority until such time as it decided to return to more sane policies that actually benefited the people of this country, rather than just those people pulling the political strings at the top.
So, I am now, for the first time in my life, in favor of removing the filibuster. If that is done, then the only impediment to doing the right thing is the idiocy of two or three RINO senators, and I am quite sure that both positive and negative pressure can be brought against them in order to convince them to do the right thing for not only their particular constituents, but for the entire nation.
yeah, remember that Sinema woman in Arizona and Manchin are the only reasons it failed when they tried last time and they’re both gone.
Is Mitch McConnell still on the floor?
Johnson is a big do nothing….
Perhaps the only way we can prevent the new, radical communist version of the Democratic Party from gaining control of Congress and the Presidency is to govern really well for the next 3 years, and that means doing things in Congress that can only be done by ending the filibuster. Maybe in the future we can bring it back when more reasonable, patriotic people assert control over their party.
If so, they would have done it when they had control.
The cons have ways been stupid excuses
Those who consistently whine about protecting the minority always stay in the minority.
Or make the Dems actually filibuster.
...and do what with the majority?
The GOP has enough Anti-Trumpers that it would never pass. It would be much more effective for J.D. to actually preside over the senate and whip them into shape.
