A 48-year-old Davenport woman faces a felony theft charge for library materials overdue for 13 years, according to Scott County Court documents.
Stacey Diehn faces a charge of second-degree theft, a Class D felony, court records show.
According to a Scott County arrest affidavit, Diehn and a relative checked out library materials from the Davenport Public Library, 3000 Fairmount St., on April 3, 2012, and also on other dates, with April 19, 2012, as the last date of activity.

Isn't there a "statue" of limitations on this?

I’ll bet the local fuzz put down the donuts and jumped all over this case. Just to get out of the office for a while. Dodging illegal alien invaders can’t get boring when some skank mayor tells you to leave the wetbacks alone.

The library sent Diehn notices by mail, notifying her of overdue items and fines. The library also sent a collection agency regarding un-returned library material and unpaid fines,
Now, what would you do if you were the librarian? let it past or enforce good rule keeping.
The arrest could have been avoided by one person’s actions. Hint, it was not the librarian.

Honestly, the fine should stop accruing once the replacement value of the book has been reached.

That’s nothing. George Washington had a $300,000 overdue fine for Vattel’s Law of Nations which FRiends know well that was returned and the fine was excused in 2010. The second book he never returned was Volume 12 from the British House of Commons Debates which hasn’t been located.

This is exactly what my mom said would happen if I didn’t get my butt on that bike and take those books back on time.

Our local library is kind of screwy. You can check the status/reserve/renew books from an online portal. It is never right. It shows we returned books we still have and has occasional ly showed books past due long after we returned them. We were only charged once for failing to return a book though, which was accurate.

In 1967 I checked out Up Ship by Charles E. Rosendahl (New York: Dodd Mead, 1931), a book that argued the case for the Navy's airship program. I dutifully returned it after reading it, but I wish I had "lost" it and paid a fee of $5 or so for "losing" the book, then kept it in my collection. The book is worth $200-$300 today.

A fine more than the cost of the book is excessive.
