China threatens Sir Keir Starmer with breakdown in diplomatic links unless Britain backs Beijing over owning Taiwan

China has threatened to cut diplomatic ties with Britain unless Keir Starmer supports its ownership of Taiwan.

Beijing's ambassador to the UK, Zheng Zeguang, said that the 'key to ensuring the sound and steady development of UK-China relations' depended on Britain accepting that 'Taiwan has never been a country' and that Taiwan 'belongs to China'.

Zeguang said that Britain made an 'unequivocal commitment' to defend China's ownership of Taiwan when relations were established with the People's Republic of China in 1972, and stressed that the deal must not be forgotten.

Britain has long acknowledged China's claim on Taiwan without endorsing it.

Beijing considers Taiwan — a democracy of 23 million people that has been governed separately from China since 1949 — to be a breakaway province, and has not ruled out the use of force to bring it under its control.

China puts military pressure on Taiwan by sending warships and aircraft near the island almost daily.

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te and his ruling Democratic Progressive Party reject Beijing's assertions and maintain that Taiwan is a sovereign country whose future should be decided by its people.

'We hope that the UK government will honour the solemn commitments it made in 1972...and handle Taiwan related issues prudently', Zeguang told The Telegraph.

In response to Zeguang's comments, former security minister Tom Tugendhat said: 'Beijing's attempts to distort international law, including claims that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 confers dominion over Taiwan, should be resisted. These are rightly matters for the Taiwanese people to determine. Using economic coercing to force others to submit does not make it legal'.

Like you said: "China recognizes weakness."

And, right on cue:

In response to Zeguang's comments, former security minister Tom Tugendhat said: 'Beijing's attempts to distort international law, including claims that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 confers dominion over Taiwan, should be resisted. These are rightly matters for the Taiwanese people to determine. Using economic coercing to force others to submit does not make it legal'.

Could a more weakly-worded response have been crafted?

Starmer longs for the days when the Limeys were delivering Opium to every Chinese Port.

China is cheap. But if they go the Saudi route and make large donations to Starmer’s favorite charities, they will find that Starmer will quickly come over to their way of thinking and change policy.

The whole conversation is fascinating, with details almost never mentioned in the political posture of those like the UK's Starmer.

Without regard to one's preferences, we might agree that mainland China and its Communist government hold political power on the mainland.

Also without regards to preference, many think that Taiwan -- supposedly the Republic of China -- is in control of the island chain which makes up Taiwan today.

In fact and again without regard to preferences, the Commies claim rightful control to Taiwan while the political parties of the Republic of China claim control over mainland China, something the media rarely mentions.

Details with links:

Article 11 -- "Rights and obligations between the people of the Chinese mainland area and those of the free area, and the disposition of other related affairs may be specified by law."

Article 91 -- deep in the text of the Republic of China constitution reads:

"The Control Yuan shall be composed of Members to be elected by Provincial and Municipal Councils, the local Councils of Mongolia and Tibet, and Chinese citizens residing abroad. Their numbers shall be determined in accordance with the following provisions:

"1) Five Members for each Province;
"2) Two Members for each Municipality under the direct jurisdiction of the Executive Yuan;
"3) Eight Members for the Mongolian Leagues and Banners;
"4) Eight Members for Tibet; and
"5) Eight Members for Chinese citizens residing abroad."

Source: Taiwan (Republic of China) 1947 (rev. 2005)

Turns out Tibet is "mainland." As is Mongolia, Xinjiang, and other mainland areas.

So BOTH governments claim to lead places they do not currently lead / control.

Sounds as if this will NOT be settled by some simplistic chatter by a short-term and unpopular UK Prime Minister.

You know Keir is going to fold like a cheap suit. Red China won’t make that same demand of President Trump because they know what his answer will be.

Taiwan, as an independent political entity, has not been and is not an existential threat to the country of China.

The CCP’s vendetta against Taiwan is 100% from the politics of the CCP, and zero percent from the standpoint of any detriment to the people or national interest of China.

It is all about political concerns of the CCP. Democratic Taiwan is a political affront to the CCP; how can the CCP dictatorship be necessary, when Taiwan proves otherwise.

The CCP’s vendetta against Taiwan is because the CCP, for its own party agenda, not China’s national interest, must oppose any Chinese democratic model, especially one as successful as Taiwan’s. They killed the local democracy movement in Hong Kong as a lesson to Taiwan; as if to say you’re next.

The trouble with politicians accepting their first bribe from the ChiComs is that the ChiComs will always demand more for far less.

Starmer? China probably doesn’t need to threaten him; he usually does what’s wrong without being threatened.
