“the same AMOUNT of food will still be sold and bought, the planes, trucks, and boats that carry it all will simply deliver it in different places. If China switches and buys soybeans elsewhere, the folks that USED to shop ‘Elsewhere, Inc.” will then have to get their stuff from...
...guess who!”

Good thinking, as far as it goes.

What is missing is that food supplies can be expanded; Argentina for example can expand the supply of soybeans.

When supply exceeds demand some farmers go out of business. The concern is China will manipulate the world’s economic system and harm U.S. agriculture the way it has harmed U.S. manufacturing of widgets.

That’s the kind of rebuttal I like to get. :)

Americans do not have to buy Chinese products, and if they are essential and only available from China, it is high time they were made and sold elsewhere.

Back when I worked at the kosher deli counter in Winn Dixie in South Florida, I noticed that the Winn Dixie’s brand of apple juice was made in China. WTF. If America has one resource in abundance, it’s apples.

You evidently don’t understand that the cellphone you are so very fond of using is built upon a radio that is manufactured in China. My business is related to cellular telemetry, and must also use those radios.

It will be difficult to do in America, and difficult to do here in Israel, too. But it must be done. They are not trading partners, but enemies. Why enrich them for the latest designer sneakers made by slave labor?

The point of the matter is that I am being punished on behalf of the US manufacturers who do not want to make those radios. I don’t have either the lifespan or expertise to make them myself.

I’m quite aware. Manufacture the radios elsewhere. My cellphone is made in South Korea. My last one was a Huawei made entirely in China. I admit that the radio on my new one is probably made in China, but they’re not the only ones who can make high-end miniature radios.

The Huawei was a POS.

The US manufacturers can get up off their duffs and start making the radios.

That isn’t the only phone sold in the US. The radios are either made in China or Italy. None are made in the US or even by a US company with manufacturing facilities overseas. Apple makes their radio in China and they don’t sell it to anyone else. What shall I do? Give up the business, making sure that yet another US operation closes down?

Maybe they don’t want to. I have no control over who makes cellular radios.

The market, however, does have control over everything, and Trump has levers to change the reality in the market. Where there’s a demand, there’ll be a supply. Choke off the Chinese supply line, and American manufacturers will see their opportunity and jump on it, provided the choke-off is long term and not just a negotiating tool quickly reversed, in which case your worries are illusory. I’m for a long-term tariff on all Chinese goods. Americans and everyone else, too, must learn to stand on their own two feet, rather than importing cheap feet from enemy states.

Remember the finali in Wall-E, last Disney flick ever worth watching? Captain Fatso defeats the machine and stands on his own, heading back to earth. Everyone cheers.

“Environmental rules, labor rules, all have to be absorbed some how.”

National emergency. Waive them all.

There was a time the USA could do almost anything - and quickly.

Tariffs on imports are paid by the importer of record
Ah, I AM the imported of record. If you are correct, please explain the US Customs charges on my credit card.

////////
so how to explain relatively flat inflation

flat inflation in a high tarriff environment means that the us billion dollar importers of chinese good are not paying higher prices. rather chinese exporters are lowering their prices to US importers to keep market share. Or the US importers are not passing along their costs.
