In the age of widespread internet use, many of the old fights about television’s depictions of sex, violence and profanity have fallen by the wayside. And now, one of the 2000s’ most prominent culture watchdogs is at its end as well. On Friday, the Parents Television Council declared bankruptcy.
The Burbank-headquartered nonprofit filed for liquidation in Delaware’s federal bankruptcy court, revealing about $92,000 of assets and $285,000 of liabilities. The council’s revenue and cultural relevancy had dwindled since the aughts, when it sparked record-setting regulatory fines against major media companies and churned out reports on shows’ racy content amid the booming popularity of cable television. Its stated goal was “to ensure that children are not constantly assaulted by sex, violence and profanity on television and in other media.”

One figure who won’t be sad to see the council go? “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane. He said in a 2008 interview with the Advocate magazine that being on the receiving end of the council’s criticism was “like getting hate mail from Hitler.”

Oops, “like getting hate mail from Hitler.” is one reason.....
The early seasons were pretty good but I gave up on FG years ago.
Every now and then, a funny clip will show up on Youtube.
Never thought it was good. But it has plenty of stuff lefties aren’t supposed to like.
I’ll have to give FG credit with the Star Wars parodies.
I thought they evaporated when cable became a thing.
Once again, Ecclesiastes 3. The group is past its time. Bless em for their earlier work.
I thought they started well after cable.
Those were funny - a lot more so than their average show.
Over the Air broadcast television is a small and shrinking percentage of the problem now. In some ways, this organization is obsolete, as cable and streaming is inherently less vulnerable to public commentary if the target audience is reached. In the case of pay cable/Internet (Netflix, HBO), advertisers are not even an issue.
I remember them!
Mostly I remember that everything worse than Davey and Goliath came with a long list describing every hint of flesh tone, mildly disrespectful language, possible violence, or misbehavior.
The impression was of a bunch of slavering pervs with pocket protectors wearing out VCR cassette heads trying to find a bit of leg in mindless TV sitcoms. Kids meanwhile found more spicy content if they ventured into school or anywhere else in public — so the effect was to project Christians as being entirely detached from reality. (and then you had the aftershock of churches trying to be hip and modern and disconnect themselves from the Bible in the process).
Similarly they seem to have had zero effect whatsoever in inhibiting TV writers and producers from pushing the Overton window straight off the cliff.
No more parents care about their kids.....send them to public schools!
Originally part of the Media Research Council (David Bozell, et al).
Big Streaming believes no watchdogs required, let’s show the porn. MRC will have to acquire back the assets.
And that’s a victory for the Left’s push to normalise pedophilia, pornography, and sexual perversions.
Cable was one of their major targets early on, because of its practice of bundling a bunch of stations into a "package", meaning that even if you chose a package because of its great sports or news channels, the package usually included one or more raunchy channels that also streamed into your home, where children could have access; and you couldn't eliminate them individually. Bozell testified before Congress and PTC lobbied the FTC for years over cable bundling.
See post 17.
Didn’t they also go after Married With Children?
