Officers patrolling French beaches lack training and proper equipment, a police leader has said, despite hundreds of millions of British taxpayers' pounds being handed over to France.
Marc Alegre of the Unité police union, which represents officers in Calais and Dunkirk, said cash had been spent on the wrong type of vehicles.
He added that officers allocated to the beach patrols from other parts of the country lack training to do the job effectively.
Mr Alegre expressed fears about officers' lives being put at risk by extreme violence from migrants and traffickers. He said his organisation was pressing the French government to set up specialised police units instead.
'No one has been trained in France. It's all on-the-job experience,' he told The Telegraph.
'When you come from Lyon or Paris and you come to work on the beach, it's not the same job.
'When you work in a housing project, it's not the same way of working as on the beach.'
He continued that British cash was not always spent effectively.
'Regarding the resources bought with British funds, we don't ask the police officers who are on the ground for the equipment they really need,' he said.
'For example, we got some 4x4 vehicles that can go on the beach.
'That's good, but my colleagues would have preferred pick-up trucks because when we discover a boat, we have to put it somewhere, and it doesn't fit in the boot of a seven-seater.
'But a boat with an engine can be put in the back of a pick-up truck and driven away.'
He added: 'Police are pelted with stones practically every night. We're short of cars because they're vandalised by migrants, whom the smugglers and traffickers order to throw stones at us to slow us down. All our vehicles are damaged.'
