As I write this, the Democratic press releases are still being edited, but the collective scream soon to come is perfectly predictable. Already, Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu said on BlueSky that “Republicans are messing up the economy,” based on private jobs data that came out Thursday.
You can see why Democrats might make that argument. It seems the latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a meager job gain in August of 22,000, with technical revisions to recent months data in the negatives by 21,000. Even without that revision, that’s a job growth rate of a tenth what Joe Biden achieved in good months during his term.
But the screams, and the rocketing stock market hoping for a rate cut based on the numbers, miss the fact that this dismal employment picture might be a sign that Donald Trump’s policies are working as intended.
So far under Trump, federal government employment is down 97,000 jobs. It was down 15,000 jobs just in August and it is going to keep going down as those who have already been fired, but are still getting severances, still count as employed. State government employment in August was down 13,000 too, which may reflect cuts to state government grants. And those numbers come as parts of the federal government that Trump likes, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement are on unprecedented hiring sprees.
The Trump administration also has cut tens of billions of dollars (maybe hundreds of billions) in nonprofit grants, on which the government spends a fortune. The BLS doesn’t report monthly numbers in the nonprofit sector, but you can expect that these cuts are having a big impact in the government-adjacent parts of the economy. One clue in the data is that “Religious, grant-making, civic, professional and similar organizations” ...

NOTE:
In recent months, the federal government has rounded up tens of thousands of often-employed undocumented immigrants all over the country in industries from construction and agriculture to transportation and manufacturing. That’s a net negative for job growth too. Employment among Hispanics was down 15,000 jobs in August according to the new BLS data.
Right now it is unclear how this is playing out in individual sectors of the economy as these are “employment” numbers. If someone is deported and the job is filled right away, employment stays the same, but if the job is not filled it goes down.
The true measure of the economy is wage growth which is the number 1 thing I look at and that went up again. It seems the jobs numbers are more reflection of transition over tariff uncertainty and high rates. As tariffs become the norm and rates get cut you’ll see more companies start ramping up employment just in time for the holidays
We can start returning illegals back to their governments. We’re not going to need their subhumans anymore. Bidenskyyyy didn’t know how to count.
Joe took credit for the job returnees after the Covid lockdown.
I think most of us understand the little bit of short term pain for big long term gain at play here just like Trump 1 only more.
The normal year round residents here have chosen too many jobs as the jobs they don’t want to do. The illegal aliens don’t want to do them either. They’d rather be up at Yellowstone harassing the buffalo and eating S’mores with Sasquatch.
The jobs numbers should be low until the end of the year.
150,000 federal employees took Musk’s offer from 6 or 7 months ago.
They’ll be counted as unemployed in the next couple of months.
Some Ill-Eagle housekeepers are being replaced by Roomba robots.
Hyundai is part of the net loss in job growth.
After recovering from the shut-down of the economy, employment of native-born Americans was flat from 2023 to 2024 (Biden’s final two years). It then starting rising in 2025 (the first year of Trump’s second term). Since April 2025, it has been higher than the pre-shut-down peak.
With respect to the employment of foreign born persons, this continued to rise during the final two years of Biden’s administration even while the employment of native-born Americans flat-lined. Employment of foreign-born persons is sharply down since Trump returned to office.
I would like to be able to separate naturalized-citizens and legal aliens from illegal aliens, but the data do not allow it. In fact, I suspect that the above numbers don’t fully capture the employment of illegal aliens. In any case, removing several million foreign-born persons from payrolls puts a drag on the total number, but improves the job prospects for the native born.
It looks like there should be about 450 jobs opening up in the Georgia Hyundai plant.....
