More than 84 per cent of respondents believed that capital punishment deters the trafficking of drugs into Singapore.

A large majority of people living in the region believe the death penalty is effective in deterring serious crimes such as drug trafficking in Singapore, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Tuesday (Aug 26).

In an online survey conducted on 12,000 residents from six regional cities, 83.9 per cent said they believed that the death penalty deters serious crimes such as murder and the smuggling of firearms into Singapore.

Separately, 84.2 per cent of respondents, who are aged 20 to 64, indicated that capital punishment deters the trafficking of "substantial amounts of drugs" into the country.

Spent a wonderfulweek in Singapore a long time ago. Beautiful, safe place at that time, though I thought Singapore Sling was overrated. . Had a side trip to Malaysia to watch rubber trees being tapped. Best looking man I ever saw showed us how it was done. Tapping tibber trees was his actual job.

I hope lovely Singapore hasn’t gone off the rails.

Widespread application of the death penalty greatly reduces the number of repeat offenders

The idea behind punishment is not to eliminate crime, but to keep it to manageable levels.

I was there this spring. It is still beautiful, super clean, polite, organized and overwhelmingly safe. The ONLY piece of litter I saw in four days was a small sliver of paper. I picked it up and put in the trash receptacle.

I even felt compelled to only cross the street at intersections. It’s funny how deterrence works.

And yes, I paid $39 for a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar. You don’t travel halfway around the world and pass up that opportunity.
