President Donald Trump said Friday that Chicago will be the next city that his administration targets for a federal crackdown on crime and suggested a longer and more intense campaign in the nation’s capital.
“We’ll straighten that one out, probably next, that will be our next one after this,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “I think Chicago will be our next and then we’ll help with New York.”
The president has credited his federal takeover of Washington, DC’s police force and deployment of the National Guard there with driving down crime in the city — touting a weeklong stretch without any murders as a “miracle” despite the fact that such weeks have occurred in DC multiple times so far this year.
He said he could keep National Guard members in the city “as long as I want” by declaring a national emergency, a prospect likely to unnerve city residents. More than 1,900 National Guard troops from multiple states — including DC, West Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Ohio, Louisiana and Tennessee guards — have been mobilized in DC as of Thursday, according to Joint Task Force-DC.
Trump also took aim at DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and threatened to do more than just seize control of the police force if she didn’t “get her act straight.”
“I’m tired of listening to these people say how safe it was before we got here. It was unsafe. It was horrible. And Mayor Bowser better get her act straight, or she won’t be mayor very long because we’ll take it over with the federal government running like it’s supposed to be run,” Trump said.
Trump dismissed polling that showed most city residents disapprove of the deployment of federal troops, calling it “fake news” and claiming that residents of Chicago...

“Trump set me up.” - Mayor M. B.
Ah, Chicago.
So maybe State Street will be That Great Street again.
Half the Chicago crime problem could be cleaned up with a single visit to City Hall
I understand how that can be easily done in DC because the power is constitutionally delgated to the Federal govt.
Not so for Chicago or any other US city for that matter. How will he be able to legally assume control over policing, crime control etc.?
Declare Chicago in open rebellion and send in Federal troops.

Getting ready for another leftist meltdown.
I think Trump ought to give them what they’re predicting. Embrace the “nazi” imagery and have his law enforcement wear jack boots beige uniforms. Have them goose step down The Magnificent Mile in a show of force. Keep in character.
Push the joke until it looks utterly ridiculous.
When I was a kid we used to drive from South Bend to Chicago quite often. That meant taking the Skyway in, then S. State Street north all the way into downtown.
As a young upper mid class kid in the 60’s it was absolutely fascinating to observe through the car window the “another world” atmospere of S State Chitown. Music blaring, Bars on every corner, the people, clothing, decked out Caddies, all of it was spellbinding.
That makes you a little younger than me. I was born in Chicago in 1942 and lived in the area until 1961 when I went off to college, law school, and the army.
I took that route many times. If you got a little diverted it was really something...and I have South Side Irish ancestors. Something tells me it wasn’t the same!
The guy is unbelievable!
Like he hasn’t already put 253 things on his plate!
He’s a force of nature!
Best benevolent dictator we’ve ever had! :)
They’re going after the worst first ...
so elected officials in ChiCongo should make travel plans now.
The 64k question, though, is this...
What happens to the thugs they arrest? Are they going to just be released by a judge of a feather?
For this to have long term effect, it can’t be catch and release. The courts need to be overhauled, too.
“How will he be able to legally assume control over policing, crime control etc.?”
The same way the federal government polices the size of toe board openings on construction site scaffolding anywhere in the United States.
Take the power under the toe board clause that can be found in the Constitution - if you look hard enough.
Or just claim federal police are needed to protect migratory birds that may stop in a wet area for a snack and a place to rest.
I don’t like it but that is the way it works after the disaster at Appomattox.
He can probably declare some kind of national or health emergency and send in National Guard. Congress has passed laws for everything at one time or another, and no doubt there is one that can be stretched to justify Federal troops on the South Side of Chicago for a period
Constitutionally, IMHO, its not good or ideal.
I would rather Trump simply cut massive (and IMHO also unconstitutional) massive payments of Fed.gov money to Chicago and Illinois. After all, these woke, Democrat uniparty cities and states exist ONLY on Federal Reserve printed/fiat money, massive Fed.gov debt, necessary high taxation, and massive spending.
Am glad there are still some small-government Constitutionalists here on FR
Sadly, the USA is steadily turning into some version of Brazil/Argentina/Venezuela
We WILL have a big and powerful Federal Government, welfare state, and massive debt, taxes, and inflation to support it. And because of Government's huge power, national politics will become a life-or-death struggle for position and wealth.
And for future American citizens, there will be a Hobson's choice of a large central state, controlled either nationalists/traditionalists or neo-marxists.
Trump has learned from his first administration.
I think he did an above average job.
This time? So far, he may be one of the greatest Presidents ever.
If we went with Harris in 2024, it was probably going to be the end of America as we know it.
“And for future American citizens, there will be a Hobson’s choice of a large central state, controlled either nationalists/traditionalists or neo-marxists.”
President Davis said about the future: “Truth crushed to the earth is truth still and like a seed will rise again.”
boots on the ground around DC is one thing... How’s he gonna get away with armed forces for law enforcement in individual states/cities??
