Hundreds of arrests have been made across the UK as part of a "week-long crackdown" on asylum seekers taking jobs for delivery firms.
A total of 1,780 people were stopped and spoken to over suspected illegal working activity between 20 and 27 July.
Some 280 were arrested as a result - in areas including Hillingdon in northwest London, Dumfries in Scotland, and Birmingham.
Some 89 of those have been detained pending removal from the country and 53 are now having their asylum support reviewed, which the government said could result in their support being suspended or withdrawn
The Home Office described the operation as a "nationwide intensification week" targeting illegal working hotspots, with a focus on the gig economy, where work is assigned on a short-term or job-by-job basis, and people working as food delivery riders.
Immigration enforcement teams will receive £5m from the £100m in funding already announced for border security, aimed at increasing visits by officers in these areas over the coming months.

Way too little way too late
Trust me it’s an illegal palooza
Homeland Security should just start ordering DoorDash and UberEats and GrubHub and arresting everyone who shows up with the delivery!
Possibly, but everything has to start somewhere. If you don’t fight at all, failure is a certainty.
It's called the The British Isles for a reason.
Their borders are the ocean.
The problem is not stowaways on large ships.
It thousands upon thousands arriving in open boats, sometimes rubber dinghies.
Money ain't the problem here, it is the will to maintain a national identity and sovereignty.
The Brits have voted to keep their sovereignty with Brexit.
The question now is do they have the will to reestablish their national identity.
Ick, why anyone has food delivery is beyond me. How dirty is the person? Is he nibbling on your order and with his fingers? Did he sit your sack right where someone up chucked? Just, no, no, no!
But great idea. At least the cops can check for ID and insurance.
True. The road back is going to be brutal
Day late and a Pound short.
Hundreds! Hundreds! Wait, the real number is 89 if half don’t find a judge to release them like here.
Get back to me when planeloads of illegals leave the UK. In fact, pile ‘em into rubber boats and push into the Channel. That’s how most got there.
This is just for show, anyway, most all will be released.
They’re probably too European for the U.K. to allow in. Not the moon god worshippers raping young girls.
Yes but a least it’s a start Trump is proving it’s worth the effort.
Many of these gig companies purposely hire illegals because they can pay them less and they do. The illegals work with stolen identities and Social Security numbers… These gig companies know it and don’t care. They look the other way when things go sideways with a delivery, often placing the blame on the customer themselves for complaining. They also “update” the apps regularly to coddle the illegals by sending automated messages to the customer during the service to cover up the language barrier issue.
I know....I am a gig worker.
They also buy accounts from legals and work as if they are them… getting just a percentage of the minuscule pay. As you probably know.
Sincerely problematic if they are driving vulnerable people around with “rideshares.”
Yes they do! The “legal” owners of the accounts should also be prosecuted. They’re so incredibly stupid doing that because they are on the hook for taxes on any earnings. Why would you even think about doing that?
Agreed.
