Microsoft’s Use Of China-Based Engineers Could Be Leaving Pentagon Tech Exposed To Hackers

Microsoft has relied on engineers based in China for years to help maintain some of the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DOD) most sensitive cloud computing systems, potentially leaving them vulnerable to hacking, according to a new investigation from ProPublica released Tuesday.

Because U.S. law prohibits foreign nationals from directly accessing federal systems that handle sensitive data, Microsoft has been funneling work through American “digital escorts” — low-paid workers with security clearances but often possessing limited technical expertise — who input commands from more skilled China-based engineers into federal networks, according to ProPublica. The arrangement, largely unknown even within the federal government, is raising alarms among national security and cybersecurity experts as the engineers could gain access to sensitive government data with little oversight, potentially exposing critical systems to Chinese cyber espionage.

The system has reportedly been in place for over a decade, ProPublica reported. China remains America’s top cyber security adversary, posing both a threat to government and private sector entities, according to a February 2024 report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

It’s an obvious security breach, and it’s already been exploited.
That’s a given.

Microsoft is America’s H-1B company.

Do they still employ actual Americans?

First I’ve heard of that but not surprised at what contractors skirt security-wise. Just about seen it all. The cleared dopes have no idea what the People’s Liberation Army engineers are telling them to type. Insane.

Well duh. Microsoft on any govn PC is a bad idea. Chinese tech is another. Using the “cloud” is even worse. I tried telling them that to no avail.

The level to which our mission critical systems have been compromised by the Chinese and how they do it would astound people if the truth ever comes out

And this penetration usually comes from situations where people in government or industry are knowingly complicit with the subversion

It’s gotten so bad that so much Chinese tech is based on stolen Western technology that many of the Chinese techs working with the stolen technology do not fully understand what they are dealing with - which adds a whole new level of risk into the system

Sorry y’all, this is FUD.

Microsoft has an entire cloud ecosystem dedicated to China. It is 100% completely separate from all of their other cloud estates. They also have government clouds dedicated to Germany, per their laws, and the US.

All US Federal government agencies and most state and local government agencies use Microsoft’s government cloud environments in either GCC or GCC-High. Microsoft has very strict requirements for engineers who work on their cloud environments for US Gov to be US naturalized citizens only. This is per contractual and business rules.
