US imposes a 17% duty on fresh Mexican tomatoes in hopes of boosting domestic production

The U.S. government said Monday it is immediately placing a 17% duty on most fresh Mexican tomatoes after negotiations ended without an agreement to avert the tariff.

Proponents said the import tax will help rebuild the shrinking U.S. tomato industry and ensure that produce eaten in the U.S. is also grown there. Mexico currently supplies around 70% of the U.S. tomato market, up from 30% two decades ago, according to the Florida Tomato Exchange. Robert Guenther, the trade group's executive vice president, said the duty was “an enormous victory for American tomato farmers and American agriculture."

But opponents said the import tax will make tomatoes more expensive for U.S. consumers. Mexican greenhouses specialize in vine-ripened tomatoes, while Florida tomatoes are typically grown in fields and picked green.

I don’t have a backyard. I tried a potted tomato plant, but only got tiny ones. They weren’t really worth the effort.

Isn’t it better that they grow tomatoes in Mexico and keep the farm workers there?

That’s very funny. They do grow tomatoes in Mexico, but farm workers still come here for everything else. We would have to import everything from Mexico.

“Tomatoes cause inflammation. Avoid them.”

While tomatoes are often associated with inflammation due to the nightshade family they belong to, research suggests they can actually help reduce inflammation, particularly through the antioxidant lycopene. Lycopene, abundant in tomatoes, has been linked to reduced inflammation and improved heart health.

If you get good sun exposure, you can try grape tomatoes. That has worked well on my patio.

you want to become a billionaire quickly?.. just invent and patent a way to grow and transport tomatoes that replicate the delicious ones we grow in our home gardens that can be bought year-round in the grocery store.

Don’t tell me. Tell Tom Brady. He’s the one who avoids tomatoes due to inflammation. And he’s the best QB in history so I’ll take his word for it.

OK. I haven't had much experience with container growing stuff, although there are a few things I want to try.

One is some allegedly very cold hardy varieties of lettuce, and the other is something I just learned about called a 5 Color Chinese pepper, which is technically classified as an ornamental and doesn't look like it gets too big. Looks like a good container size plant.
