I took it to mean it was an accidental wildfire that they “managed as a controlled burn”. It wasn’t that long ago (and maybe still is) that fires in some areas were just allowed to run their natural course “as nature intended it”.
Perhaps the “managed as a controlled burn” was a policy compromise between letting it run rampant and extinguishing it?
Regardless, I bet that lodge and facility are never rebuilt due to “environmental concerns”.
Well captain, we got the fire started and everything was going great, then we noticed it was getting close to lunch and we had to take our break per union rules. Soo we went into town and when we got back, the lodge was already gone and we were bloated from lunch.
Regarding the suggestion park workers get off their butts to remove brush in the forest with a ax and shovel during the winter months, between December and March the north rim of the Grand Canyon typically receives between 100 and 120 inches of snow. How would someone accomplish what you are recommending with several feet of snow on the ground at a temperature of 20 degrees F?
There is a reason the north rim of the Grand Canyon is closed from December 1 to May 15 each year. The reason is deep snow and impassible roads, not lazy park employees.
No, very sad outcome but I assume it will be rebuilt.
FYI -
United States Geological Survey Bench Marks
Grand Canyon (North Rim) - 8803 Feet
Grand Canyon (South Rim) - 7120 Feet
Bummer. We had lunch there on July 4th one year and afterwards the NPS had a squirt gun fight with visitors to celebrate our national holiday. On the way in we drove through burnt areas of the park. This was back in 2010.
They are a terrorist group.
I wouldn't go that far, but they are delusional and corrupt. It's a misanthropic Wildlands Project agenda destroying what was effectively an iconic property of the American people. They should be forced into paying for the reconstruction.
I visited the Grand Canyon once. Its a large hole in the ground. 🙄
I am a geologist and I have never been there.
East Slope or Front Range, same thing.
CO since ‘55 with brief absences to NM and VT.
Boulder ‘73 to ‘76. The wind does get a little sporty there. :)
You’re not missing that much. 😉
But I want to see the erosion.
Well there’s plenty of erosion at the Grand Canyon. 😉
Aramark recently bought this property and others, like the Bryce Canyon Lodge - which has poor wifi as well. They say it's to stay "rustic", but I think they don't want to spend the money. If they want to stay rustic then take out all the hvac systems. I thought Bryce Lodge was poorly run when I was recently there - not a good reflection on Aramark.
