Yes, then was defeated by Elizabeth Warren.

He later moved to New Hampshire and ran for the Senate in 2014, very narrowly losing to Shaheen. Probably had a ceiling of support due to the “carpetbagger” label, even though NH was his original home state, and that was just enough to keep Shaheen in there...that was a very strong GOP year. Since he has now been living there again, now for well over a decade, we’ll see if they try the “carpetbagger” label again if it can stick. But NH is also even now less Republican than it was back then...though there was a glimmer of hope with how close the presidential race was and they continue to elect Republican governors. Sununu probably would have been able to win the Senate seat given his popularity and the fact it is still fairly purple overall...but he chose not to run.

Ayotte lost to then-governor Maggie Hassan, not Shaheen. Shaheen defeated John Sununu.
