The PR Fallout of Ted Cruz Versus Tucker Carlson: Yes, It’s Just as Bad as You Heard

For political junkies who cut their teeth on “60 Minutes,” “Meet the Press,” CNN, and Fox News, longform podcasts were a godsend. Finally freed of commercial restraints and surface-level superficialities, longform podcasts took you beyond the talking points, treating audiences to a deep dive of a topic’s intricacies. Even when the podcast host had limited knowledge of the subject matter (Joe Rogan, I’m looking at you), the benefit of the longform platform was that it facilitated an open-ended, free-floating conversation where both sides learned more about the other.

But there was an important catch: It only worked when both sides were acting in good faith. You had to really, truly care about what they say. More than anything else, that’s the secret to Joe Rogan’s phenomenal success: He’s genuinely curious about his guests.

He doesn’t invite them on to mock them or belittle them. He’s not trying to settle stupid feuds, score points, or play a political game of “gotcha.” Instead, Rogan respects his guests and wants to learn more.

That sure wasn’t Tucker Carlson’s approach during his astonishingly mean-spirited interview with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.). The ex-Fox News host had absolutely no interest in hearing Cruz’s opinions or to better understand his (and President Trump’s) position on Israel, Iran, or anything else. His purpose wasn’t to have a grown-up conversation about grown-up issues, but to mock and belittle Ted Cruz so the video “goes viral”:

“Oh, I don’t think I’m obsessed with Israel,” Tucker Carlson said… in a podcast where Israel was mentioned 140 times!

Ted Cruz tried his best to be conciliatory: He warmly welcomed Tucker Carlson (the interview was filmed in Cruz’s Senate office).

RE: thought Tucker did a great job exposing the corruptions tactics they use against truth,

Are you saying that Iran’s nuclear program does not pose a threat to Israel and Natanyahu destroying their ballistic missiles and reactors is based on a lie?

“ He could also have told that smarmy d-bag Carlson to get his head out of his colon, quit being a jerk, and try to have a polite conversation”

But he didn’t. He should have

Huh.

Earlier, you said he should have groveled and abased himself before Carlson Almighty. Now you agree with me that he should have stood up to the little creep.

That’s progress, of a sort.

BTW, would you please translate this: “enable home to be a lazy sackable” to English? I can’t tell if your fingers got ahead of your mind, or spill-checque did you dirty. Thanks.

You wrote: "He could have said in a friendly manner ‘I should know that I’ll find out "

Act like that in front of a "journalist" (or whatever that smarmy creep carlson fancies itself to be) with a piranha complex, and you're toast. It amounts to groveling and abasing oneself, and it invites further verbal attacks.

I'm not even a little bit wrong.

That's a damning indictment of the little creep.

Carlson has problems and people are talking about them. Cruz is a smart guy, smarter than Carlson, but he really ought to be doing his homework and not speaking entirely off the cuff or just repeating what he’s told to say.

Tucker Carlson started to believe he was the leader of MAGA and got too full of himself and went off the Rez.

His naughty behavior in that dismal video with Steve Bannon has resulted in him being excoriated on social media this week to the point that he had to phone President Trump and apologize. Tucker’s credibility has taken a big hit. I believe he was so angry at being rejected by the MAGA folks he just decided to showcase his superiority by beating up on Ted Cruz. That also backfired as he just came off looming lime a petty, mean spirited troll.

At least Steve Bannon has the good sense to lay low and try to walk back some of the nonsense he shared with Tucker on that ill fated video.

RE: Ahhh, poor neocon Cruz,

Why isn’t Trump a neocon and Cruz is?

Once in office, Trump appointed several neocon-aligned figures (like John Bolton), ordered the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, hunted down and killed ISIS leader Al Baghdadi, In April 2017, ordered a missile strike on Shayrat Airbase in Syria. The U.S. Navy launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles from ships in the Mediterranean Sea, targeting the airbase that was believed to have been used in a chemical weapons attack on civilians in Khan Shaykhun,
and also maintained a hardline stance on Iran and China.

So while he rejected the label, some of his actions echoed neocon priorities.
