Trump signs resolutions targeting California’s electric vehicle mandates

US President Donald Trump on Thursday signed three congressional resolutions aimed at overturning California’s push to accelerate electric vehicle adoption and ban the sale of petrol-powered cars by 2035.

The move rolls back a key part of California’s climate policy, which had been adopted by 11 other states. Trump, speaking at the White House, called the state’s policy “a disaster for this country.”

“We officially rescue the US auto industry from destruction by terminating California’s electric vehicle mandate,” he said.

The resolutions come after lobbying by automakers including General Motors and Toyota, which had opposed California’s rules on grounds of regulatory overreach and potential cost burdens.

In December, the US Environmental Protection Agency under President Joe Biden granted California a waiver to enforce its mandate requiring most vehicle sales in the state to be electric.

California Governor Gavin Newsom responded sharply to the reversal, saying in May, “Big polluters and the right-wing propaganda machine have succeeded in buying off the Republican Party.”

They didn’t mention Elon Musk his time.

It's disappointing that "reality" doesn't make for a sufficient argument in court.

Shallow thinkers do not absorb the truth about EVs.

1) In 2008 US oil consumption was about 20 million barrels/day. In 2023 (last year with data) the number was 19.8 million bpd. Residual Covid. In about 2 weeks the 2024 numbers will be out and I expect 20 mbpd.

2) This means that all those EVs on the road, PLUS POP GAIN, has not reduced oil consumption.

3) Why not? Well, you can argue pop gain offset EV savings, but the actual truth is that EV buyers are largely urban. When they drove a gasoline car, they didn’t drive it far. So erasing that gasoline consumption with an EV really doesn’t save much — Because They Weren’t Burning Much Anyway.

4) Politics has not accepted this year. The EV climate people are still thinking in terms of total adoption. Their early years spike in growth of EVs has stopped. There is nearly no growth at all now. Probably will decline some soon.

Watching it now-delayed.

He needs to do the same when it comes to eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts. Do it in Hollywood. The Chinese Theater. Invite the Hollywood crowd and let them ask questions. Would they be on their better behavior? It would be in their interests to do so.

The major reason is Covid, and Covid-induced "work from home" which, since 2000, has become a major social phenomenon. This is the main reason oil/gasoline demand has flatlined since 2020

On what basis can Trump claim this will not be challenged/enjoined by federal courts?

Electric vehicle mandates are the dreams of the people who DO NOT LIVE in the real world

Two points for consideration:

1. The article talks about three congressional resolutions. Resolutions have no force of law. They are just opinion pieces. Are they really resolutions, or did the author mislabel them?

2. Few people pay much attention to the 10th Amendment anymore. But if a state stupidly wants to ban the in-state sale of petrol-powered cars, wouldn’t that be their 10A right?

Perhaps the Commerce Clause overrides that. But unfortunately, the Feds often use the Commerce Clause to override anything they don’t like.

This went through Congress. A judge would have a very hard time overruling it. They may find a hack Judge that will try but would almost certainly get slapped down pretty quickly.

17 states are following CA's mandate. So Trump is right to revoke it.

California should not be dictating policy. It should be discussed in Washington, D.C. by Congress.

Not in California with Gavin Newsom making all the decisions.

Big Crime and Hoaxers combined with the left wing propaganda industry have bought off and now completely own the Democratics.

California’s climate policy, which had been adopted by 11 other states.

Eleven states have ceded law-making authority to the unelected California Air Resources Board. If you live in one of those eleven states, let that sink in.

Our Democracy™ in action.

> 17 states are following CA’s mandate. <

I’m playing the Devil’s Advocate here, as I like nothing that California is doing.

If those 17 states are somehow being coerced by California, then the Federal Government has a duty to step in. But if they are all following California’s stupid rules voluntarily, then it seems like the 10A should apply.

I guess a deeper question would be if any individual citizen’s constitutional rights are violated by California’s law. I don’t see that, but I’m certainly open to a counter-argument.

Even if we live in red states, CA's EV mandate will affect us because Detroit is not going to manufacture ICE vehicles if they're banned in 50% of America (due to the population in the blue states).

Sometimes the Feds need to get involved.

Thank you for referencing that article MinorityRepublican. Please note that the following critique is directed at Gov. Newsom and not at you.

"California Governor Gavin Newsom responded sharply to the reversal, saying in May, “Big polluters [??? emphasis added] and the right-wing propaganda machine have succeeded in buying off the Republican Party.”"

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Consider the largest (?) EV charging station in Newsom's "backyard."

Largest EV Charging Station In the World is Powered By Diesel-Powered Generators (10.3.23)

There are other states besides CA with electric vehicle mandates that need to be overturned!

The one caveat being that this was a resolution versus the full weight of passed legislation.

Exactly right. The car makers will only make cars they can sell in every state. Therefore Ca being such a huge market they could bully the entire market if they are allowed to ban ICE vehicles.
