Local large discount store/supermarket in Michigan had a Korean nail salon in front. Found to be hiding their growing of marijuana illegally under lamps in back, with one plant less than the legal threshold for expectation of selling. 49 or something. Crafty.

It’s unlikely they are employees at all. Salons have figured out the loophole. The owner just builds out the work stations - for hair, nails, makeup, massage whatever. The worker then rents the space as an independent contractor. No payroll. No payroll taxes. No disability insurance. No withholding. Just collect the rent, preferably in cash.
