The man who stabbed and partially blinded novelist Salman Rushdie onstage at a Western New York arts institute in 2022 was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Friday (May 16) for an attack that also wounded a second man, the district attorney said.
Rushdie, 77, has faced death threats since the 1988 publication of his novel "The Satanic Verses," which Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Iran's supreme leader, denounced as blasphemous, leading to a call for Rushdie's death, an edict known as a fatwa.
Hadi Matar, 27, a US citizen from Fairview, New Jersey, was found guilty of attacking the author in the Chautauqua County Court in Mayville, New York, in February. He faced a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison on the attempted murder charge. Video that captured the assault shows Matar rushing the Chautauqua Institution's stage as Rushdie was being introduced to the audience for a talk about keeping writers safe from harm. Some of the video was shown to the jury during the seven days of testimony.

7 MINUTES SHOULD HAVE BEEN ENOUGH TIME
Geez...I had no idea Rushdie had been attacked. Somehow I missed the story when it happened. I guess I was focused on other things.
Obviously, he got what he deserved, but it took 3 years!
Everybody pretty much forgot about this!
It was actually pretty simple case.
Arrested on the spot with hundreds of witnesses!
What about the “speedy trial” guaranteed by constitution?!
For a criminal defense lawyer, delay is the name of the game. They hope the jury pool will have forgotten all about it, or at least gotten used to the idea.
Hadi Matar should at least be stabbed in the eye (an eye for an eye), and then be sentenced to 25 years in prison. Jihad continues apace. Speech (Satanic Verses) is not allowed in Islam. We the taxpayers get to house and feed this UNHUMAN POS for 25 years.
I am saddened by the result. Not that this scum will rot in jail, but that it takes so long to prosecute these cut a dried cases.
Did he do it. Everyone says yes. Maybe a month, max
Yes
Thanks for the info.
It is frustrating, how long these trials go!
The judicial system really needs some kind of reform.
My wishful thinking.
Judicial DOGE!
I know, the lawyers have lots of influence, I doubt it will ever happen, but we can dream.
