More than 100 people have been taken into custody by federal immigration officials in a joint operation with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, leaving many in Nashville’s immigrant community uncertain and worried.
“None of us have ever seen anything like this,” Lisa Sherman Luna, executive director of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition said Friday.
The operation with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a reminder of how local and state law enforcement jurisdictions are critical to President Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations. Last week, Florida officials touted a joint operation with ICE that resulted in 1,120 immigration arrests.
The Highway Patrol said Friday that it made 588 stops in the joint operation with ICE, which took custody of 103 under investigation for immigration violations.
The stops “led to the recovery of illegal drugs and firearms — taking dangerous elements off the street and making Tennessee safer,” the Highway Patrol said. One person was wanted in a killing in El Salvador.
Tennessee’s Gov. Bill Lee recently signed a law creating a division of immigration enforcement with the state’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security, which includes the Highway Patrol. He is one of a number of Republican officials pledging to use state resources to carry out Trump’s plans.
Meanwhile, city officials in the Democratic stronghold of Nashville have disavowed involvement and been critical of the arrests. Nashville Law Director Wally Dietz said the state-federal operation, which began May 3, caught everyone in city government by surprise.

Good. The only rights these scumbags have is the right to GTFO of the US.
Hopefully they called it Operation Wetback.
In 2001, Sherman Luna’s family made the difficult decision to move to Nashville from their home in Guatemala when she was a teenager. T
You have the right to remain silent.
Thats a start!
Any military applicants coming forward?
Good. 3 major interstates run through Nashville.
That headline is misleading. It suggests the people were arrested for supporting the policy. But the way they mean it seems to be that the people who oppose the policy were arrested by supporters of the policy. This is a dangerous approach to discourse. People who think some kind of “civil war” is brewing are validated by this approach to journalism.
Headline wrong or what? 100 trump supporters arrest?
"2 charged with trafficking cocaine in metro Atlanta"
"WALTON COUNTY, Ga. — Two people are facing drug trafficking charges after being found with large amounts of cocaine and guns.
Pedro Acosta, 35, and Nancy Catalan, 41, are currently being held in the Walton County Jail.
Both Acosta and Catalan, who are not U.S. citizens, are being charged with trafficking cocaine.
Investigators say they recovered several kilograms of cocaine and at least four guns when they arrested the pair on Thursday.

I assume Democrats will be holding a rally for the two and demanding their release on Mother's Day.
Better headline:
“In actions showing support of Trump’s deportation plans, authorities arrest over 100 illegal aliens on Tennessee roads”
Or, they could have ignored Trump’s deportation plans altogether and written:
“In actions geared to make Tennessee’s roads safer, authorities arrested 100 illegal aliens on driving violations”
Horribly written headline, isn’t it?
The stops “led to the recovery of illegal drugs and firearms — taking dangerous elements off the street and making Tennessee safer,” the Highway Patrol said. One person was wanted in a killing in El Salvador.

As bad as it gets.
Wow... wotta messed up headline because they can’t speak plain truth.
It reads like Trump supporters were arrested when in reality ICE just rounded up illegals.
How much does that gig pay I should wonder 🤔
