You don't see that every day.

“You don’t see that every day.”
Maybe you and me, but considering the following, it does seem like a very common occurrence there:
“The University of California Berkeley Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded...”

Well they do run the Lawrence Livermore Lab where a lot of weaponry gets developed (along with a partnership with others running Los Alamos). A “nuke” EOD team?? 😳
A friend of mine from high school went to Berkeley and worked at the LLL developing nose cones for ICBMs.

Officers diverted traffic from the area and homes were evacuated as authorities worked to secure the grenade Despite what you see in movies, if you’re 100 feet away, you should be okay. Just close your door and don’t sit near a window.

“a multi-unit home on California Street where Kuceja was living illegally”
Not clear what this means. Living there without paying rent and without a lease? Surely not living there illegally as an illegal alien, since Berkeley is a SANCTUARY city and thumbs its nose at state and federal immigration and naturalization law.

I give it a 99 percent chance that he is an illegal.

“Upon looking inside, the officer observed what appeared to be a grenade with the safety pin partially removed,”
Okay, he didn’t “throw a live grenade,” he threw a bag with a possibly real grenade inside of it.
And we won’t be told exactly what kind of “grenade” it was for a while, if ever.

The way things are shaping up, the next two years should be a regular riot unless efficient use of police brutality makes a big comeback.

Try getting an eviction in SoCal. Next to impossible. Squatters have more rights than the actual property owners. You have to pay them ransom to get then out.

OK, this article is crazy. It’s not like the dude pulled the pin and threw the grenade.

Local police playing to type by overstating, or “crying wolf”?
To: nickcarraway
From the photos, it appears to be a WWII-era "Pineapple" grenade and the safety lever (the "spoon") is wrapped in some sort of rubber or plastic band. If it was thrown from the car like that that, it would make it a paperweight: it's impossible to detonate with the spoon held down.
If it wasn't in place when it was thrown, the cops could've rendered it safe by unscrewing the fuze - easily done.
