Problem is simple to fix.
Just don’t have self checkout in predominately black places.
You’ll have cheats everywhere, but the “entitled few” are the worst.
I read somewhere Walmart is experimenting with AI checkout.
No clue how that is going to work.
Good question (hadn’t thought of that). None. I’m sure a lot of customers were short-sticked back in the day to make that extra buck for the proprietor.
And checked the air in your tires too, while wearing a white service station uniform with their logo on it.
Who buys their groceries at Target?
I have observed all races of people skipping items at self-checkout as well. I am sure prices I pay are covering the cheaters. Recently I was at Home Depot and observed a white dude with some type of large wrench in his back pocket walking out without paying. He looked 30-35 age.
I live in a B10 college town that has had unchecked apartment growth near campus. Target has a ground store near the quad in a fairly big apartment building. A local/regional chain has a similar grocery store a few blocks away...

Yes
I guess this comment requires a longer reply.
Bear with me.
I used to work in a Liquor store in a neighborhood mostly populated bu illegal Mexicans. There was a lot of theft.
One day a local stole a bottle of wine and the store owner said run him down! Me being a cross country runner and having some martial arts training, no problem!
I stopped him.
Cops read me the riot ACT!
When they arrived.
I’m a minor and I took down a fully grown adult with ease.
That upset them.
BTW the bottle of wine was returned to the store intact.
Only the cops feelings were hurt.
My boss gave me a raise. I’m not sure which death camp he survived but, his left arm had a crude star of David and a number Tattooed on it.
Very Jewish guy.
This is about a lack of an honor system among a significant portion of the population. This is about a lack of moral values, along with a "who's gonna catch me?" attitude.
Unfortunately, retail chains feel uncomfortable with putting the most effective checkout process in place by location based on results of theft, error, etc. Instead, it has to be system-wide, in order to avoid issues afterwards.
As soon as our society comes up with a solution that works best everywhere, problem solved.
I like self-checkout. No waiting in a long line.

Man hitting checkout with hammer repeatedly....
I always laugh when they say this is the “Service Era.”
You pump your own gas
You check your own oil
You check your own tires
You check yourself out at the stores
You bring your own bags
You bag your purchases
You take your purchases to the car
You put the bags in your car
When I was a kid, all grocery stores and service stations did those things for you.
A month ago, I was doing self-checkout for a couple of items at Safeway (the checkout lines were long). I paid and got my receipt, then the machine glitched and put up a big error screen. The woman standing by said “Wait, sir, you can’t leave.”
I told her “Screw that, I have to get home. I paid and I have a receipt. You fix it!”
She got really pissed and said “SIR, you wait here!” and called the store manager. I just walked out. Not only do you have to do all their work for them, they accuse you of being a crook and breaking their terminal to steal a couple of items worth $4.
Unbelievable. I’ve been shopping at that store since 1983!
Our Internet at home (AT&T Fiber) has been down for TWELVE DAYS. They made FIVE truck rolls over two weeks and didn’t fix it. I started raising holy hell with the company, wrote to my State Rep, wrote to our City Council, wrote to some AT&T execs, made a couple dozen calls and spent 15-20 hours on the phone. Every time a new guy came out, he had NO notes from the previous guys. They finally sent out a GOOD tech guy today with a can-do attitude (truck roll #6) and got it fixed.
“Service Era” BAH!!
“Target rips out self-checkouts as retail thefts plague stores — but customers aren’t happy”
misleading BS clickbait headline:
“Last March, the popular chain announced plans to limit self-checkout to 10 items and limit or remove self-checkout kiosks amid complaints about clunky technology and concerns about rising theft.”
I’m real clumsy with the scanners, finding the bar code, and the flimsy plastic bags. It takes me forever. If I have two or three items, I like it. But more than three and something always goes wrong. I STILL forget I can’t buy beer or wine at self-checkout.
It was pretty cool last week. I checked everything out and came to the beer and wine then full stop! The nice guy took me to a closed register, transferred what I had already rung up to the new register, and added the beer and wine. That was really cool he could move a partial transaction to a different register.
I told my friends years ago when they started putting “self-checkout” machines in at the Stop n Shop I was at would lead to theft that would increase prices across the board and that didn’t even include the cost of overall installation of the machines and wiring , the labor to install ...so now decades later they come to the same conclusion . I always go to a cashier and even had some ask as to why I waited in line ? I simply stated that I would rather deal with a person.
This has been some years ago. A buddy and coworker mentioned that he overheard students in a merit study lab talking about ripping off the local Kohls and similar stores. This was before massive surveillance was put in place...
