A task force formed by Mayor Brandon Johnson nearly a year ago to determine whether and how the city should pay reparations to Chicagoans who are the descendants of enslaved African Americans will start meeting this summer to craft a plan to tackle the thorny issue.
The 40-member task force will be charged with developing “Chicago’s first comprehensive reparations study, a critical step forward in acknowledging, addressing and repairing generations of harm experienced by Black communities,” according to a statement from the mayor’s office.
Task force members will be paid to serve for a year, with the study of recommendations for reparations expected to be complete by the summer of 2026, officials said.
The task force will study the institution and legacy of slavery, Jim Crow Laws and other discriminatory policies and practices that have contributed to systemic racial inequities in education, employment, wealth- building, housing, safety and more,” according to the mayor’s office.

I just see Chicago as a real world wacanda. I have for years, ever since I visited relatives there and while watching the local news realize that every single person in every single newscast was black, from the reporters to the man on the street to the politicians. With the exception of that one funny looking Asian lady.

I suppose it would be in poor taste to mention that slavery was banned in the Northwest Territory, of which Illinois was a part, by the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 was written by the evil ‘slave-owning Founders’ and predates the Constitution itself.
Makes me think about that ‘70s movie, ‘The Skin Game’ - if cities are going to do this, what’s to ensure that people don’t move to chase the ‘reps’?
Seems to me the harm being done to the black community is from the black community itself.

My nephew in Virginia was offered a huge promotion and large pay raise - the catch was he had to move to Atlanta.
Wife said no and said she would divorce him if he took it.
He passed up the promotion and raise - and we wonder if he’ll ever get another one...He may well have saved their lives, though.
How about buying them all one way tickets back to Africa.
