Trump’s DOT left to clean up Biden admin's $43 billion grant fiasco

The Trump administration’s Department of Transportation revealed that it inherited an “unprecedented backlog of grants” left by the Biden administration.

In late March, the DOT’s Federal Highway Administration reported that Secretary Sean Duffy had finalized a $221 million federal grant to rebuild Rhode Island’s Washington Bridge — its westbound side has been closed since December 2023 following a “critical failure.” The funding for the project was initially announced in the fall of 2024, but the Biden administration “failed to sign the agreement.”

The DOT’s announcement noted that "the Trump administration inherited roughly 3,200 unobligated grants that had been promoted by the previous administration but never fulfilled.”

Duffy stated, “Since coming into office, my team has discovered an unprecedented backlog of grants leftover from the previous administration.”

He slammed “ridiculous DEI and Green New Deal requirements” for preventing “real infrastructure from being built and funded.”

“Under the Trump administration, we’ve ripped out this red tape and are getting back to what matters. As part of our work to deliver real results, we are pleased to announce $221 million in grants for Rhode Island’s Washington Bridge — a critical link that carries thousands of vehicles a day,” Duffy declared.

A DOT spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the backlogs totaled $43 billion. After Trump won the election but before he took office, the Biden administration reportedly announced $9 billion worth of grants to 1,000 recipients that were not made official before Biden departed.

“Nothing was done to actually get these grant agreements signed and sent to projects,” the DOT spokesperson stated.

During the April 10 Cabinet meeting, Duffy told President Donald Trump about the previous administration’s massive grant backlog.

“The last administration announced 3,200 projects, big, beautiful roads and bridges — most of them are good. But they announced them — they didn’t sign a grant agreement,” he explained. “So the money doesn’t go out the door to build the infrastructure in the country. And it’s fun to do an announcement. It’s actually the harder work to put together these grant agreements.”

Duffy noted how the Biden administration included “green and social justice requirements.”

“We’re pulling all that out and putting the money toward the infrastructure, not the social movement from the last administration,” he said.

Trump responded, “Good steel, right? As opposed to green papier-mache.”

On Monday, Duffy announced that the DOT had saved taxpayers $63.9 million by terminating a grant between the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak to build a high-speed rail project in Texas.

Duffy called the project “a waste of taxpayer funds and a distraction from Amtrak’s core mission of improving its existing subpar services.”

“If the private sector believes this project is feasible, they should carry the pre-construction work forward, rather than relying on Amtrak and the American taxpayer to bail them out. My department will continue to look for every opportunity to save federal dollars and prioritize efficiencies,” Duffy said.

Dear Mr. Duffy,

Please, please stop all funding for “rail” projects in Minnesota. Especially in Hennepin County. One project is 5+ years behind schedule and up to $2 billion. Stop any funding for the train going from Minneapolis to Brooklyn Park. For good measure, claw back one billion dollars.
Thanks,

Best news that I’ve heard all week (besides Trump finally figuring out Ukraine). This project (Dallas to Houston) was a COMPLETE SCAM in that it was promised as being TOTALLY PRIVATE...but the people doing the promising were a bunch of retired POLITICIANS.

Then...guess what, the feds swooped in and started funding it. Hopefully it is DEAD IN THE WATER now.

please, please, please kill ALL grants for multi-million dollar dedicated concrete bicycle freeways that no one uses ... they built one beside the 8-lane highway between boulder and denver and several years after completions i’ve yet to see a single bicycle use it ...

now they’re building a dedicated concrete bicycle freeway between boulder and longmont, and i fully expect to see zero bicycles commuting between those two cities when the bicycle freeway is completed ...

Bicycle transportation is an article of faith among Leftist transportation planners. The idea you’re going to pry mommy and the kids out of their CUVs so they can ride bikes to ballet and soccer practice is a pipe dream. Then again, it is Colorado you’re talking about and y’all do like your pipe dreams . . .

Hendricks/Cobbs received $35 M for doing Genetics on Chickens under Biden. Cobbs received additional USDA GRANTS in 2023-24. Zooms in on the supply chain’s choke point: the genetics duopoly of Hendrix Genetics and Cobb-Vantress, who control breeding stock for nearly all U.S. egg-laying hens. Pair that with Cal-Maine Foods, the world’s biggest egg producer, and you’ve got a tight grip on both ends of the egg game.

bicycles are a form of recreation, NOT a form of transportation in a modern culture ... period ...

here’s a short list of transportation needs that can not be performed with bicycles in Colorado’s extreme climate and vast distances [or most climates and distances for that matter]: hauling groceries, furniture, lumber, or landscape materials; taking multiple kids to school; taking kids to the ER or even to the doctor; taking the elderly or disabled to the ER or even to the doctor; taking multiple kids to school or even single kids with sports and/or music equipment to school; trying to ride a bicycle more than a couple of miles for most of the unfit population of our state; riding a bicycle more than a few blocks in the Rocky Mountains; consistently riding a bicycle for Colorado’s long daily work commutes; riding a bicycle for any distance on anything but a paved highway or paved bicycle lane paid for with gasoline taxes; riding a bicycle in blasting wind, rain or snow; riding a bicycle in bitter Colorado winters; riding a bicycle in Colorado’s oven-like summers; riding a bicycle safely at night for more than a few miles; any combination of the above ....

On the other hand, if you’re a fit 25 year old and you need to shop for something relatively nearby weighing less than 10 pounds during the 1% of the time it’s safe, convenient, practical, and comfortable to ride a bicycle for, then a bicycle can be used for “transportation” ...

it’s an obscene waste of Federal and State tax dollars to build expensive bicycle highways that almost no one can ever use ... no amount of bicycle highways will ever compensate for the fact that bicycles are a form of recreation, not transportation ... furthermore, wasting 10% of Federal highway dollars on bicycle highways instead of improving automobile and truck highways demonstrably results in more autos and trucks creeping along on the resulting unimproved highways and streets, thus outputting substantially more carbon that the leftist ideologues like to pretend is destroying the Erth ...

We’re in complete agreement.

Now look up the term “road diet” if you want to get mad some more about Leftist city planning.

Yes, cruelty to animals is so wrong. I have several neighbors who keep "free range" chickens. Maybe I should start buying eggs from them again.
