Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday praised Elon Musk, comparing him to Sergei Korolev, the chief engineer behind the Soviet Union's space success in the 1950s and 1960s, state news agency TASS reported.

TASS cited Putin, who was speaking on Russia's space policy at a meeting with students, as saying: "You know, there's a person who lives in the states, you could say that he's absolutely crazy about Mars."

It quoted him as drawing a comparison between Musk and Korolev, the engineer who was instrumental in the Soviet Union's success in sending Yuri Gagarin on the world's first crewed spaceflight in 1961.

Putin has previously praised Musk, whose business interests include the SpaceX space technology company, as "an outstanding person."

Musk, a top adviser to President Donald Trump, has become increasingly vocal in his criticism of Ukraine

So who goes on Musks trip to Mars? When he does it?

As you mentioned, he can send robots. All the companies that he created are helping him achieve his goal of Mars expeditions and settlements. He knows it's a nasty world for humans. SpaceX will build the interplanetary Starship rockets and communication satellites. Tesla is building the humanoid robots, EVs and AI control systems. The Boring Company is building the automated drilling machines to tunnel into Mars for creating underground habitats and for finding underground water. NeuraLink is creating the human/machine interfaces for humans to control and communicate with robotic equipment, without it humans can't communicate quickly enough by using voice of hands.

Elon Musk has been clear on this, the first missions will be accomplished by robots. They will explore and begin building the settlements long before humans can live there. I doubt that Musk will live long enough to make the journey (landing onto the ground).

Been paying some attention to this lately.
They simply have got to develope some sort of artificial gravity to accomplish a viable human mission to mars..or any planet.
It seems that Musk is leaning toward tethering.

Then, powering the whole thing is a problem. The further they get out tge larger the solar system. So mini reactors come into play.

Next is raduation.
I agree. I doubt any of us will live long enough to see human settlements on Mars. Unless...somebody creates rapid drives systems to get there and back within days.

Yes. But the problem with rapid speed is the need to slow the craft enough in order to land without crashing, which consumes a lot of fuel. Couple that with the thin atmosphere, and a landing is problematic. Many spaceships will die trying to get a solution, so they'll use humanoid robots until then. Musk plans to have SpaceX build thousands of Starships, most likely necessary to find a solution for safely landing a ship on Mars. Not likely to happen for quite a while. Can't count him out, as he has accomplished many things that was thought to be impossible.
