Republicans Ted Cruz, Rand Paul speak out on risks of Trump tariff policy
ABC NEWS ^ | April 7 | By Alexandra Hutzler

As fallout continues from President Donald Trump's destabilizing tariff policy on virtually all U.S. trading partners, some Republican senators are warning about the risks for American families.

But so far, there are limited signs of any widespread cracks in overall GOP support for Trump or prospects for any congressional attempt to rein him in.

Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican and ardent Trump supporter, made headlines when he spoke out -- first on Fox News last week and in recent days on his podcast "Verdict."

"Tariffs are a tax on consumers, and I'm not a fan of jacking up taxes on American consumers, so my hope is these tariffs are short-lived, and they serve as leverage to lower tariffs across the globe," Cruz told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow.

It reminds me of March 11, 2016, the night Trump’s rally was cancelled because of the leftist organized protests. Cruz gave a news conference saying the leftists were wrong, but it was partly Trump’s fault too.

That was the night I stopped cruzing and became a trumpster, and all this does is remind me why.

(It was also the night Keith Emerson killed himself, which as a fellow organist made me feel even more angry. It was another anniversary of an event that I will leave unmentioned here, except to say that it was the beginning of the end of my late wife’s life, though that wouldn’t happen for another five years.)

Tariffs are a tax on consumers, and I'm not a fan of jacking up taxes on American consumers.

A tax American are willing to pay to save the country from total economic collapse, a collapse that our kids and grand kids to will have to endure.

FIXED IT.

i can't believe i voted for ted in the 1st primary.

dodged a bullet i did.

guess ted would rather citizens be indentured debt slaves to the fed res rather than be free and prosperous with tariffs.

She’s crying on the side of the road somewhere. Cruz talks a good game but he’s a weak link in the chain.

Like all GOP deficit hawks they are really just liars and hypocrites. I estimate that the tariff should take in in $400B/yr in NEW federal revenue. Not to shabby.

How Cruz and the rest of the GOP phonies lament the tariff is beyond me. The GOP was THE Tariff Party in the past.

Ted Cruz says the swelling national debt will reemerge as a major concern for Republicans"

I’m going to summarize Cruz:

(A) If Trump uses tariffs (or the threat of tariffs) to achieve lower tariffs between us and our trading partners, this could be great.

(B) If high tariffs are a new permanent tax, this could be terrible.

The crap Cruz and Paul are arguing FOR even if they do not realize it is the continued hollowing out of the country, offshoring of jobs, lower birthrates, and turning a large chunk of the existing population into 3rd world status. Cruz is probably in on some grift although for Paul it is likely just the typical myopic view, not to mention a default open borders mentality, that I see nearly every Losertarian I know argue for.

So, we already know that you and Rand Paul don’t like Tariffs, but I have not heard your solution to the fact that other nations have been leveling a wildly unbalanced and unfair Tariffs against the US for decades.

So what is your solution or Rand’s solution to this issue?
