All 19 of the world's glacier regions experienced a net loss of mass in 2024 for the third consecutive year, the United Nations said on Friday, warning that saving the planet's glaciers was now a matter of "survival".
Five of the last six years have seen the most rapid glacier retreat on record, the UN's World Meteorological Organization said, on the inaugural World Day for Glaciers.
"Preservation of glaciers is a not just an environmental, economic and societal necessity: it's a matter of survival," said WMO chief Celeste Saulo.
Beyond the continental ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica, more than 275,000 glaciers worldwide cover approximately 700,000 square kilometres, said the WMO.
But they are rapidly shrinking due to climate change.
"The 2024 hydrological year marked the third year in a row in which all 19 glacier regions experienced a net mass loss," the WMO added.
For the UN, the only possible response is to combat global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"We can negotiate many things in the end, but we cannot negotiate physical laws like the melting point of ice," said Stefan Uhlenbrook, the WMO's water and cryosphere director.

You know those amazing discoveries being made in former glacial ice sheet regions as they ice recedes, the Viking-age shoes, clothing, bodies, settlements, all the rest?
The ONE thing each and every one of those news articles mentions is “global warming” as typical mindless parrotry of jowhorenalistic malpractice fear porn, the intimation being “global warming,” “climate change” is made-made.
What NOT one of those articles mentions - ever - is the fact that, in order for those items to have been left behind 1,000 years or more ago is, there WERE no glaciers/ice sheets in that area then.
There are hundreds of graphs available online from ice core samples and other collected data showing Earth’s temperatures cycling hot-cold, tropical-iceball planet over thousands and billions of years. The planet has been both far hotter and cooler in past eras.
Wanna have some fun? Find posts on other sites where “keyboard experts” are waxing “manmade global warming” poetically and inject one of these, or articles from Watts Up with That and watch those guys go ballistic, switching into ad hominem attacks in les time than it takes to burn the roof of their mouth with a microwaved hot pocket from their mom’s kitchen.
Yes. The climate is changing. Yes, the planet gets warmer/cooler. Man’s activity has little to nothing to do with it. Nothing humans can do will change it long-term. The system is TOO vast, the external factors to enormous, the hysteresis too unpredictable for us to even attempt to control the global temperature. Not if we’re wise, that is.
At least not until we’ve populated Mars, the asteroid belt and have colony ships en route to other solar systems.

I was vacationing at Glacier a few years ago. Was eating at the place I was staying. A group of teachers asked the owner about glaciers and he told them some years they are larger and some smaller. They asked, they grow? He told them yes when they get more snow in the winter.
