President Donald Trump openly challenged U.S. allies Wednesday by increasing tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports to 25% as he vowed to take back wealth “stolen” by other countries, drawing quick retaliation from Europe and Canada.
“The United States of America is going to take back a lot of what was stolen from it by other countries and, frankly, by incompetent U.S. leadership,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “We’re going to take back our wealth, and we’re going to take back a lot of the companies that left.”
Trump removed all exemptions from his 2018 tariffs on the metals, in addition to increasing the tariffs on aluminum from 10%. His moves, based off a February directive, are part of a broader effort to disrupt and transform global commerce.
He has separate tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China, with plans to also tax imports from the European Union, Brazil and South Korea by charging “reciprocal” rates starting on April 2.
The EU announced its own countermeasures on Wednesday.
The EU’s punitive action completely disregards the national security imperatives of the United States – and indeed international security – and is yet another indicator that the EU’s trade and economic policies are out of step with reality,” he (U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer) said in a statement.
“The EU was set up in order to take advantage of the United States,” Trump said.

They did exactly what we let them. We are just removing permission to take it up the behind.
“by incompetent U.S. leadership”
We know he wants to say “by corrupt U.S. leadership”
Well that jury is still out on tariffs working...All depends on Public opinion..
Agree.
We need to build new Steel plants, I think our aluminum plants are ok. Both steel and aluminum are crucial for national security.
Agree.
It wasn’t stolen. The EPA, Unions, DOEnrgy, etc. drove our basic manufacturing out of the country. Now we are going to pay sales tax (oh I mean tariffs) to get them back. If Trump ever gets us back to energy freedom and released from regulatory shackles we won’t need tariffs. But that means killing ethanol and burning coal.
Yes, the EPA, DOE and Communist Unions just collaborated with Foreign Thieves for a share in the loot.

I agree, both good ideas.
Socialism costs a lot of money. Money these parasites have been stealing from us. Have a nice death commies.
What I would really like is a neutering of the eco-Nazis so that power plants can be built and low electricity prices make our steel competitive without tariffs.
A massive former Reynolds aluminum plant was just torn down not more than 2 miles away from me couple years ago. Plant was built in 1941 for WW2 and covered 500 acres.
I have no animus against coal (any working coal plant has excellent scrubbers and should be allowed to max out production) but I believe nuclear could be cheaper if we didn’t let the leftist vermin turn the permitting process into a decade long ordeal. For the short term natural gas plants’ lifecycle cost is still cheaper than either.

The USMCA was negotiated, signed and praised as the best trade deal in history by the president who is now trashing it as unfair.
It wasn’t stolen. It was given away (drove out) for free. The idiot leftists didn’t even cash in on it. The grifting wasn’t as good back then.
Communist China would disagree with you, they paid good money for all the Americans they Own, and they Own a LOT of Americans.
Does it apply to import of finished goods that contain these materials?
When foreigners import our goods, are we stealing their wealth?
No that is Commerce.
