President Donald Trump said he would “probably” extend his April 5 deadline for TikTok to be sold or banned, raising the possibility a deal might not be made after expressing optimism last month that TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, would reach an agreement with a U.S. buyer before then.
Key Facts
Trump said “probably” when asked by a reporter Thursday whether he would be willing to extend the 75-day deadline he implemented via executive order in January, adding, “we have a lot of interest in TikTok . . . so hopefully China will approve of the deal.”
TikTok went dark for about 12 hours on Jan. 19, the day before the deadline Congress set for ByteDance to find a buyer—but the app was restored after Trump vowed to extend the deadline.
The law only allows Trump to extend the deadline for 90 days, however, and only if there’s evidence ByteDance is working toward a sale.

This business of making bold pronouncements such as tariffs, relaese the hostages or else, forced peace in Ukraine, sale of tik Tok followed by backups, delays or no action is beginning to hurt Trump politically. Reminds me of a tennis player with good skills but can’t make up their mind when to execute a bold move, misses chances and ends up losing. The shock and awe phase did its job. Now just get hard results and constinacy.
Can’t help but agree with you so both of us can get ready to take the flak here. I wonder if he did the same thing when he asked Melania to marry him - “perhaps tomorrow OR perhaps next week OR maybe a month from now.” We all know how it works with him - throw it all out there and wait for the reaction!!! Strangely there are some who refuse to admit that’s it’s usually a ploy...He has never moved away from “The Art of the Deal”! I guess you can say it’s worked for him...with a burp here and there over the years!
