Ontario will tariff electricity going to 3 US states on Monday, premier says

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said three states would face tariffs on electricity after a week of President Trump’s swipes at Canada with fluctuating trade policies.

“I love Americans. It’s been 20 years of my life. But in saying that, no, we’re going to put a 25 percent tariff on electricity coming from Ontario to Michigan, New York and Minnesota,” Ford said during a Thursday appearance on Fox Business Network’s “The Claman Countdown.”

The leader said new tariffs are scheduled to be implemented Monday in an effort to push back on Trump’s international economic measures.

“And isn’t this a shame? It’s an absolute mess. He’s created chaos. He ran on a mandate. The lower cost, lower inflation, create more jobs. It’s the total opposite,” Ford said.

“You know, people are going to be losing their jobs in the U.S. and in Canada, and inflation is happening already,” he added.

Ford said tariffs will only hurt families on both sides of the border.

“The market is going downhill quicker than the American bobsled team right now, and it’s unacceptable,” he told anchor Liz Claman

It can easily get much worse.
Its also easily settled.
Its “art of the deal” stuff, unlike war & peace.

Who really won the U.S. versus Canada dairy trade dispute? [Feb. 3, 2022]

Winding back a bit to the USMCA negotiations, former President Trump called on U.S. negotiators to eliminate Canada’s restrictions on dairy imports. Using his then preferred method of policy dissemination, he tweeted, “Canada charges the U.S. a 270% tariff on Dairy Products! They didn’t tell you that, did they? Not fair to our farmers!” But is that true?

While the original NAFTA liberalized nearly all agricultural trade among the three countries, there were a few notable exceptions. Canada maintained tariffs on dairy goods ranging from 241% for liquid milk to 298% for butter. The trade protection is an essential element of its national program to establish fair dairy prices and manage supplies.

Minnesota needs to wake up.
25% of their electrical energy
is supplied by wind turbines,
which can’t keep up witth the
demands. Winters are damn cold
up there.
Every single tree in that state
has been hugged by someone.

It would be an export tax, not a tariff. All it will do is cause U.S. electricity consumers to seek domestic U.S. suppliers. This would leave Ontario with a wasted asset: use it or lose it.

“cause U.S. electricity consumers to seek domestic U.S. suppliers.”

There aren’t any, on that scale. Not without a massive buildout, which will take decades, lots of billions, and permanently higher rates.

You can’t run an industrialized country on wind and solar, anyone who believes you can is an idiot. Shutting down nukes and coal is walking into disaster or caveman living style where you burn trees and whale oil. Greenies are misguided, miseducated, dumbshits. Pay your light bill waiting on the sunshine or the wind to blow or freeze. You won’t be missed.

Here is what could happen over time if Trump’s strategy of “Drill Baby Drill” and Tariffs continues for multiple years, the US will experience a manufacturing renaissance.

Germany has fully embraced the green new deal lunacy and now how energy prices that are 4x of the USA, combine that with tariff increase on Germany and it won’t be very long before German industry starts announcing manufacturing plants in the US if they want to sell in the US.

This strategy can play out against any country that embraces the lunacy of Climate Change combined with US tariffs on imported products.

That trade protection is fine on their part, but we should match it.

If we can’t supply our own power to the Northeast, how the hell do we do all this manufacturing you’re talking about? We have power companies mothballing coal and nuke plants because of the idiot environmentalists. Dude do know how to burn coal? Pull control rods on a reactor to criticality? Spin up a GE gasturbine? Synchronize a 750 megawatt generator to a power grid? Because I do. If we don’t turn this trend Around, BOHICA, cause we are screwed. EOS. Regards

Mr. Ford loves Americans but threatens to deprive them of a basic supply.

“You can’t run an industrialized country on wind and solar”

I have stated that dozens of times over the years

Wind, solar, and to some extent hydro-electric power are simply a very nice SUPPLEMENT and compliment to an industrialized power grid

They didn’t take the USA to raise. The lefties are addicted to a dollar like a lot of us. Our problem is not what we have to pay for higher light bills but why the hell do we need Canadian generated power? Ask your self that. I happen to know of several nuke plants in the northeast that were scrapped several years ago, rather than renovated. Who do you think thought that was a great idea. People have snoozed while the Greenies ran it up their butts. Time for a wake up call. Here the phones for you.

The Northeast isn’t the only part of the US that can manufacture anything.

Just due to the tariffs along, Honda announced it was adding the production of the Civic to it’s Indiana Plant instead of Mexico.

https://www.autobodynews.com/news/honda-shifting-civic-production-to-u-s-amid-tariff-concerns

When the cost of power in Germany is 4x that of the US combined with the tariffs, manufacturing will start to move to the US.

Enough states will build the power capacity to attract companies, the other key is not allowing a Green New Deal Democrat to take over in Washington.

China is not going to get everything; we are still the largest economy in the world that companies can’t afford to business in and will find a way to get their products into the US market.

Suppose you frack, what are you getting gas or oil? Whatcha gonna do with it? Are you gonna refine it? Burn it? In what? You gotta power plant to start up? How you gonna get the gas or oil there when you get it? If it’s oil you gotta get permits to do anything with what ever you got. Last time I was involved with a power plant from the time you did the conceptual designs to commercial production was around 10 years. By the way that was close to 20 years ago. I’ll bet it ain’t no faster now. Regards
