The Russian economy has overtaken Japan to become the fourth largest in the world in PPP terms (purchase power parity), according to revised data from the World Bank released at the start of June.
As bne IntelliNews reported in August, Russia had already overtook Germany to become the fifth biggest economy in adjusted terms. Hit by multiple shocks recently and cut off from cheap Russian gas, Germany is now stagnating and has fallen to sixth place in the World Bank’s ranking.
PPP GDP measurement is preferred by many economists, as it takes into account the difference between local prices and nominal prices, similar to The Economist’s famous Big Mac index: a burger in Moscow costs about half as much as the same burger in New York.

If you’re okay with Russia 1) Building a land bridge from Crimea to mainland Russia 2) Annexing more than 20% of what used to be Ukraine 3) Controlling almost all of the Black Sea Coastline 4) Controlling the area that contained the vast majority of Ukraine’s rare earth minerals and 5) Driving any NATO presence out of Ukraine and thinking Russia lost the war, I’m sure the Russians are perfectly fine with that.
I am perfectly okay with that, if it gets us out of Ukraine and Europe.

So, regular Russian military losses are likely half or less of the total.

Mostly because I don’t really care. For me the ideal outcome would be along the lines of the Iran-Iraq war back in the 80s where you both fight each other to the point of exhaustion.

Yet that Russia would take over Europe only seems possible if non-NATO countries are conquered or submit via political favor. And if Russia rebuilds with them and China and Iran also declare war in alliance. Or Putin uses nukes without the same response.

Everything that happened in Ukraine is a result of our meddling there. We fomented an illegal coup in 2014 and installed a government hostile to both Moscow and the ethnic Russian population in Ukraine.
