Governor Newsom celebrates President Biden’s action adding two new national monuments protecting sacred tribal lands

Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated President Biden’s action today establishing the Chuckwalla and Sáttítla National Monuments. The designation adds protections to more than 840,000 acres of some of California’s most culturally and environmentally significant landscapes.

Both designations honor the leadership of tribes who have stewarded these lands for time immemorial and were advanced through decades of work by local community leaders, business owners, and environmental organizations.

The new national monuments add more than half a million acres to California’s historic 30×30 initiative – the state’s goal to conserve 30% of lands and coastal waters by 2030. This addition brings the state’s total lands conserved through the 30×30 initiative to 25.8% and 26.1 million acres. Today’s announcement follows President Biden’s action yesterday to protect the Pacific and Atlantic coasts from expanded offshore oil and gas drilling.

How ironic. Biden is in town as everything burns. Respect for sacred lands aye? Even the Native Americans practiced forest management.

How the Indigenous practice of ‘good fire’ can help our forests thrive

I have been doing native plant restoration projects for 35 years. A lot of that work has been in figuring out how those plants were used and the processes to manage them, including fire. I have a lot of respect for how aboriginal peoples made the best of things for their families under very tough circumstances. You can read a fair bit about that research here.

That said, these latter day "Indians" hardly know anything more than anyone else about land management becuase the people who truly did (mostly women) died of diseases before they told anybody over 200 years ago. A lot them are dubiously related to any aboriginal tribe. The whole thing has become something of a tragic hustle for casino money.

Biden is OK with protecting "sacred [sic] tribal lands". However, protecting sacred unborn life is not in his deck of cards.

I wonder why he pretends to be "Catholic" or "Christian"? No one believes his phony schtick, particularly when he tosses around Godd**ns like popcorn to pigeons.

And in other news liberals lament lack of affordable housing and lack of building space. Experts baffled.

You’re welcome! Apparently this was also meant to mark the 5 year anniversary of CA making official apology to Native peoples?

One way to be respectful of the LAND is to properly manage it. But as the fires going on all around LA county tonight reveal…Not happening at the moment!

I agree. I didn’t see this article before, either.

That said, I don’t think I have too much problem with this action. Of all of Biden’s crazy EO’s and actions, this one isn’t too bad.

You’re right it isn’t bad. What is bad is how land in general is being mismanaged in CA. :(

Isn’t there some federal law forbidding the federal government from taking state land?

Sheerly by coincidence, the protected lands will have lots of valuable extractable resources containing carbon the the left wants to keep sacred and in the ground against the depredations of The Donald.

And how the conservationist practice of thinning forests by lumber companies can do the same thing without fire and produce useful economic benefits to the country as a result of doing so.

Yes, this is ironic, considering they did this to choke off land use (mining & drilling) while we had the grand announcement in Idaho yesterday of the new massive Stibnite Gold Mine Project which is also projected to supply over 25% of US antimony needs (we now have zero, all chyna import).

We will just drill & mine elsewhere and CA can eat our shorts.

*yawn*
