The bill provides law enforcement with more authority to detain illegal immigrants who have been accused of crimes.
he House on Tuesday passed the "Laken Riley Act" in a 264-159 vote.
The bill received bipartisan support with 48 Democrats and 216 Republicans voting to for it.
The Senate is expected to vote on it later this week.
The bill provides law enforcement with more authority to detain illegal immigrants who have been accused of crimes.
Earlier this year, Georgia nursing student Laken Riley was murdered by Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant, who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The legislation was sponsored by Rep. Mike Collins, R-Ga.
"I promised Laken’s family that I would fight for this bill like she fought for her life," Collins wrote on X prior to the vote. "Let’s get this done."
P
Don’t deport them.
Boom-boom.
let me guess that all 159 were scumbag democrats correct?
Will Briben block it??
Why didn’t the House wait a week, or, two to pass this?
Hopefully, I’m missing something, here.
May need to watch School House Rock episodes, again.
“...scumbag democrats...”
That’s redundant.
This might help:

Bottom line: the Senate does not need to immediately forward an approved bill to the President for signature.
If the Senate votes to pass it they can wait for January 20 to forward it to incoming President Trump.
When you come from a crap hole, 3 hots and a cot doesn’t sound bad. It’s near a vacation for some. Time to start culling these murderous thugs from society permanently.
If the Senate votes to pass it they can wait for January 20 to forward it to incoming President Trump.
Thx, cgbg!
You saved me from having to look for that SHR episode :-)
Happy Golden Era Beginning!!
Indeed
“...let me guess that all 159 were scumbag democrats correct?...”
Let’s see if we can fix that sentence a little bit: “let me guess that all 159 were anti-white, American-hating Communists that should even be in our government, correct?..”
Fetterman will back this in the senate. Politically smart on his part.
yep
I want to see the list of the miscreants who voted against it, in addition to Raskin and Nadler.
Yes, all 159 no votes were demonicrats...however 48 Democrats voted Aye, as did 216 Republicans.

Thanks for that link.
The Dems who voted YEA are italicized.
The “Laken Reilly Act” passed the House today and will likely pass in the now Republican Senate.
Some history: The Laken Riley Act passed the House in March 2024 by a 251-170 margin. All 170 “no” votes came from Democrats.
Then, then-Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York refused to take up the bill, per Fox News.

Another well-informed post from you. Thanks.
After passage this afternoon there was one more action taken, which I asked Grok2 to explain:
<<>> Explain in common language the meaning of the following parliamentary phrases: “H.R. 29 Motion to reconsider laid on the table Agreed to without objection.”
In simple terms, this phrase refers to a sequence of actions taken in the U.S. House of Representatives. Putting it all together, this phrase means that after voting on H.R. 29, a motion was made to reconsider the vote, but this motion to reconsider was itself set aside (laid on the table) and everyone agreed to this without any objection. This effectively ensures that the original vote on H.R. 29 stands without the possibility of being revisited unless there’s a unanimous consent to retrieve it from the table later.
H.R. 29:
This is the designation for a specific bill in the House of Representatives. “H.R.” stands for “House Resolution” (or “House Bill”), and “29” is the number assigned to the bill.
Motion to reconsider:
After a vote on a bill or any matter in Congress, a member can make a “motion to reconsider” if they want to have another vote on the same issue. This motion can only be made by someone who voted with the majority on the original vote.
Laid on the table:
This does not mean the bill is being considered or discussed further. In U.S. Congressional parlance, to “lay on the table” means to postpone or effectively kill a motion or proposal without debate. It’s a way to set aside the motion to reconsider without any further action being taken on it.
Agreed to without objection:
This part means that no one in the House objected to laying the motion to reconsider on the table. If there’s no objection, this action is taken immediately and without a formal vote.
