Greenland’s leader wants independence from Denmark after Trump suggested buying island

Greenland’s prime minister has reiterated his call for independence from Denmark after Donald Trump suggested the US could acquire the Arctic territory.

“It is about time that we ourselves take a step and shape our future, also with regard to who we will cooperate closely with, and who our trading partners will be,” Mute Egede said in his new year’s speech.

Copenhagen announced in December it would boost defence spending in Greenland, the world’s largest island, by €1.3 billion (£1.04 billion) - just hours after Mr Trump said that Washington establishing “ownership and control” of the territory was an “absolute necessity”.

Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953, when it was redefined as a district of Denmark, and established an independent parliament in 1979. However, Copenhagen continues to enact control over its foreign and defence policy.

Greenland is 3.2 times the size of Texas and has a population of 57,000.

Both he and Denmark are delusional if they think they'll control the fate of the world's largest island, that is part of the North America continent.

As Trump said, it's acquisition is a "strategic imperative" for both the US and Europe.

What Denmark could afford yearly to spend on Greenland, the US could afford to spend weekly. I think the US is more reliable in its willingness to support its territories than Denmark is.

I think Greenland comes into the U.S. fold and we will all be better off for it.

The US would then pretty much surround Canada. Alaska Greenland and the US northern border.

The Greenlanders will be allowed, as they cannot at this point under Denmark, run their state as another State under the laws of the US. They will have representation in the House and the Senate.

We still, I think, have Thule Airforce Base there, and Greenland has a load of strategic importance in minerals too.

Good people with a storied history to preserve.

But, it will never happen.

“”Copenhagen announced in December it would boost defence spending in Greenland””

Who are they defending against? Who’s their enemy?

Most countries in that part of the world view Russia as a timeless enemy.

I wonder - Is trump serious or is he working something else up? He does that.
Kinda like “watch this hand” while the other hand is actually doing the work.

Last week, there was a widespread electricity blackout across Greenland. I read that actually, many residents of Greenland never had electrical service in the first place.
Sounds rather primitive or poverty stricken.
So, where does this haughty Prime Minister of Greenland get off saying “Greenland is not, and will never be for sale!!”?

“run their state as another State under the laws of the US”

57,000 people will NEVER get two US senators.

It would be a Territory like Guam or Puerto Rico.

State 51. Greenland.

Six more to get to Barack’s 57.

Of course it should then be renamed “Trumpland”.

He wants to be king!

There are homeowners’ associations with larger populations.
And yes, the HOA board members often have similar egos!

“Greenland’s leader wants independence from Denmark after Trump suggested buying island”

By the West’s “Rules-based International Order” it’s time for the Neocons to start bombing Copenhagen until they let go of Greenland.

Well, didn’t the Neocons bomb Belgrade until they let go of Kosovo?

“”Most countries in that part of the world view Russia as a timeless enemy.””

I guess that’s still true. My husband was in the AF during the Cold War - stationed in Iceland at an isolated radar base and their job was watching for Russian aircraft - Badgers and Bisons.

Much of the Northern people, around the world, live in rustic conditions unless they live in a settlement that’s been urbanized.
