IRS data shows progressive policies have led to 'Blue State Exodus' over past 30 years

Millions of residents in blue states have migrated to red states within the past 30 years, according to federal data. A policy group that analyzed the data says it's a clear sign that many Americans find Democratic policies unlivable.

From 1990 to 2021, a total of 13 million people left California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts and migrated to Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Tennessee, Nevada, and South Carolina over the same period.

American Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Edward J. Pinto attributes this “blue state exodus” to progressive policies, with high crime, unaffordable housing, high taxes, and rising levels of homelessness and unemployment driving away residents.

“The trend is undeniable: Americans are fleeing progressive states for conservative ones, and they are bringing their incomes with them,” Pinto wrote in a recent op-ed, published in Newsweek.

[snip]

Unless Democratic governors shift course, Pinto said, their “states will face a doom loop of permanent decline due to shrinking populations, rising subsidies, diminished economic vitality, increasing poverty, and a less prosperous future.”

Conservatives are fleeing high tax, heavily regulated, high crime areas, and moving to red states. This is making red states even redder, reducing tax revenues in blue states, and making the disastrous results of democrat government even more noticeable. Democrats have total control in these states and there is no one there on which they can blame the disaster.

It’s unfortunately also making blue states even bluer, increasing the country’s division.

That’s actually not so re: crime. Much higher crime in SC, FL, etc., than in the likes of MA, NY and NJ. Taxes, yes. And cold weather, yes. (Not so much CA, of course.)

But their areas of control are becoming smaller and smaller which lessens their influence and reduces the divide. As more conservatives are elected as city mayors and council members, all those except the worst TDS-sufferers will see that conservative policies work and more will vote GOP in the future. This will continue to shrink the left’s power. It’s actually a great thing.

Correct! California is totally and irrecoverably lost at the statewide election level.

An advertisement campaign should be launched as a PSA in all RED States.

If you are coming here(Name the RED State) because of a failing DEMOCRAT State please don’t vote Democrat and ruin this state. Keep voting Democrat and you’ll be moving again and soon.

I hate to break it to people who think we can vote-with-our-feet our way out if this...

But there is not a MAGA state legislature in this country.

Not one.

And if you think yours is, I have some advice.

Look at your budgets.

Look at your election laws.

We have red states.

Possibly 50 of them.

But not one MAGA red legislature.

Unfortunately a large portion of Republican legislators at both the state and federal level think the purpose of government is to make them richer and more powerful.

I am not kidding.

They may not say it publicly but it is what they believe.

That is why they do not like rocking the boat.

Bingo. They mouth the right platitudes at election times, but once they're back in, they're right back to enriching themselves off our backs.

Exactly. Reagan was fond of talking from the ground up and not the other way around, this has not been true for a least a generation especially with the corruption that Biden has brought.

Here in MI in the last state election we lost both the state legislature and the state senate for the first time in DECADES. Why is this?

Because voters here and across red counties across the land quit voting for the lesser of evils years ago at local levels, AKA the GOPe/uniparty. I am guilty of this, absolutely despise RINOs.

(Repeal of the 17th Amendment will drastically help this.)

Actually, crime is increasing, dramatically so, in CA.

Off topic but if the voter rolls were cleaned up, Democrats would never win another election.

Is the crime lower, or have the blue states lowered the bar on what it calls crime? Do blue states keep accurate and truthful statistics?

As I said, CA is its own case. But generally, the states in the North are dramatically lower in crime than most states in the South. People who are moving are doing so despite the crime situation, not because of it.

The crime is much lower. (Demographics of course tend to be different too.)

Murder and rape, red states. Robbery, blue states. Violent crime, a mixed bag.

No. You’re wrong. And we’re talking about the blue states people are moving from, which is largely north to south.
