In 2018, the city council of Broken Hill in New South Wales, Australia, had hoped to become the country’s first carbon-free city by 2030. About $415 million USD was invested in solar, wind and battery projects within 15 miles of the town of 19,000. These generators were supposed to supply enough electricity to power 117,000 homes.
Then in October, a storm hit the region, destroying power lines connecting the town to dispatchable power from the New South Wales grid, and the entire town was plunged into rolling blackouts. While things gradually returned to normal over a few weeks, the region was hit with another blackout this month.
The disaster highlights the fact that there’s never been a grid in the world, even for a small population, powered entirely by wind, solar and batteries, despite global goals to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

On Oct. 17, the town’s position as a renewable energy demonstration project came to an abrupt close. A severe storm, possibly a tornado, destroyed transmission lines, plunging Broken Hill and other communities in the region into darkness. According to The Australian, the people of Broken Hill were “left to live like mushrooms.”
Australian political commentator and climate skeptic Jo Nova reported that refrigerators in pharmacies failed, which destroyed medications, and emergency replacements were brought in. Schools were closed, and grocery store freezers couldn't operate, spoiling large amounts of food. Emergency food supplies had to be trucked in.

Enjoy the suck, you idiots!
Power engineers have been saying “net zero” will lead to grid stability, unreliability problems, and lots of outages for a couple of decades. Did people listen to the professionals? Of course not...they believe in the Green Genie Unicorns to keep the juice flowing.
Doesn’t exist.
(Then in October, a storm hit the region, destroying power lines connecting the town to dispatchable power from the New South Wales grid, and the entire town was plunged into rolling blackouts.)
Who could have guessed...?
/facepalm
Duh 🙄🙄🙄
I just wish the “net-zero” proponents would go ahead and start living without the necessities that fossil fuels brings to society. They need to build a stick and straw house, hunt for food with their bare hands, and learn to make fire and prepare meals without any of the tools man has created. Prove it can be easily done.
(I would say they could live-stream their experience and let us know how it goes, but they need to do this without any modern technology. Someone could trek to their homestead in a year and see how they are progressing.)
Only then will I believe that they are serious.
Aussies have turned out to be the biggest spineless fag&*%ts of the 21st century. What a huge letdown from their 20th century crocodile Dundee swagger.
As I like to say, you can’t support modern civilization on wind, solar, and unicorn farts. Asserting you can do so and MUST do so by date certain in a political setting means not a damn thing. The laws of Physics trump the laws of man every time.

The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!”

Give that to those asserting you can support modern civilization on wind and solar.
At all.
I hope they brought in the emergency replenishments via battery powered trucks which had been recharged with their renewable sources...before they ran ‘dry’
I just spent over 2 hours reading this. Winds up that the root cause of the extended blackout is that the Energy Minister is a woman and thus likely has a liberal arts degree.
“I just spent over 2 hours reading this.”
actually reading this article and many related articles.
“The Minister is a woman and thus likely has a liberal arts degree”
And she, Penny Sharpe labor Party, is a lesbian. So yeah, she profiles as a looney leftist.
Don’t you just love it with dumbass people do stupid things. I think we’re running out of Darwin awards.
“And she, Penny Sharpe labor Party, is a lesbian. So yeah, she profiles as a looney leftist.”
The backgrounds of these women are horrific. This clown studies “Food Technology”, for example. Others were school teachers. At least (non-DEI) lawyers have to have a brain to pass the Bar Exam.
And now it all makes sense. The people who actually UNDERSTAND electrical power and how a grid operates are, of course, men. So, no doubt, these men try to tell this man-hating beach that her plans cannot work, she just dismisses what they say and likely responds: “Well then, figure out a way to make it work.”
But in the end, the women who run Australia are doing the US and Europe a HUGE FAVOR by making their relatively small country the guinea pigs, rather than the billion or so people in the West (the rest of the world is run by men, so they know better). And, just maybe, a lesson will be learned regarding the risks of voting as they do down there, and in Europe, for that matter (but I doubt it).
On those rare occasions where some locality tries to exist “zero carbon”, they never include the consequences of material goods imported into their site. If somebody in Broken Hill bought a new car, it came with steel made using blast furnaces and BOF’s; if anybody poured a new driveway, it used concrete made with an enormous investment of carbon fuels; any food brought into the town required tractors powered by hydrocarbons and fertilizer made from them. One could go on and on - the whole concept of a carbon-free economy is pure fantasy, unless those folks in Broken Hill want to turn themselves into Fred Flintstone’s Bedrock.
In Australia, this is called Boomeranging back to you.
But women control the means of reproduction and child rearing.

Sounds like its transmission, not generation that was the problem.
Not sure how the results would be different if the generation was by fossil fuels.

Mechanical devices are vulnerable to not functioning no matter the location. If a device is mechanical, it ceases to operate (function) eventually no matter of the circumstances. Nothing is perpetual or everlasting on this Earth, mechanical.
