A high trust society for a night, possibly a week.
Now they’re free to join the other Syrian refugees in Europe.
I remember Cambodian crowds welcomed the Khmer Rouge on that first day in 1975.
I remember Cubans celebrating Castro.
I remember the hordes in Chicago celebrating Obama.
“Millions of people celebrated the end of the Assad regime.”
I did too.
Who knows what the future will bring, and the options look grim in Syria.
But the Syrian Ba’ath Party was the last ruling party on Earth, based on the same principles as the German Nazi Party.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
Syrians of all stripes maybe celebrating their own demise.
I don’t know if it’s even that much, when it comes to “trust”.
Most interviewed say they just want to have the moment...
Israel, it would seem, prefers scattered weak factions in Syria, even if some are extremist, to the Assad / Hezbollah / Russia coop.
SOME revenge killings would be certain even if no Islamists were around. Heck, Israel was still going after ex-Nazis for half a century...
I do have a bit of a theory that a country can only be quickly transformed into a more acceptable society under exceptional circumstances, such as following a great trauma. Plus many other things must fall into place as well. Germany after WW2 comes to mind. By that token, Syria “may have a chance”, but, it is a slim chance.
I also think the idea that countries like Syria can be “stable” under a despot like Assad (or Iraq under Saddam), is wishful thinking. They may seem temporarily stable, but, it’s the stability of a pressure cooker with the pressure relief jammed shut.
Sharia has arrived.
Maybe trust isn’t the right word. But, for the moment, they are too busy celebrating their victory, and it is suppressing their normal predatory or criminal behaviors. As you said, “Most interviewed said they just want to have the moment.”
Assad was popular among the sane. He protected Christians, antiquities, women’s rights. The head choppers taking over will turn all the women into covered brood sows.
Lets get back to them in 6 months. 🤔
