South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in an unannounced late-night TV address Tuesday, accusing the country’s main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and of anti-state activities.
The last time a South Korean president declared martial law was in 1980, during a nationwide uprising led by students and labor unions.
In the surprise announcement, he cited a motion by the opposition Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament, to impeach top prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal. (continues at link...)

reversed 190-0
I remember Park Chung Hee from the 70’s. Pretty authoritarian but the South was a 3rd world $hithole back then. It’s modern now. No need for that stuff. Perhaps the nation is spoiled, a consequence of capitalism. Look at how fat our own citizens have become. No kids to get in the way.
Yeah, just saw that. We now return to our regular programming.

South Korea troops try to storm parliament after martial law declared

Sounds like something that Mark Milley and his buddies would try before President Trump takes office.
Ping a ling - - what’s going on?

A vote that is apparently being ignored. This is all a big WTF to me.
President has put military and police officers in ‘terrible situation’
South Korea’s president has put troops and police in a “terrible situation” with his surprise martial law declaration, a commentator has said.
“If you’re a young commander of the police or the airborne troops at the National Assembly, what do you do? Whose order do you follow?” Joung W Hwang told Sky News.
“The president has put these young men in a terrible situation,” he added.
South Korea’s National Assembly is likely to sit throughout the night to make sure the block on the martial law declaration continues, he said.
As we reported, South Korea’s parliament, with 190 of its 300 members present, passed a motion requiring the martial law declared by President Yoon Suk Yeol to be lifted.
Explained: What does the constitution say about martial law?
According to South Korea’s Constitution, the president can declare martial law when it is considered necessary to cope with a military threat or to maintain public safety and order by mobilising military forces.
The decision must be reviewed by the cabinet and the National Assembly must also be notified about the decision.
The law dictates that if South Korea’s parliament requests the lifting of martial law through a majority vote - as has happened today - then the president must comply.
However, it is not clear yet what is happening.
Since South Korea’s establishment as a republic in 1948, there have been more than a dozen instances of martial law declaration.
Many of these were triggered by democratic uprisings and during military coups in 1961 and 1980.
Who had S Korea civil war on their card for December
From what I’ve been able to gather the parliament is moving towards impeachment as well as deep cuts to funding in some key areas.
I don't care who you are, that's funny.
Can CNN explain to me how this is NOT Trump’s fault?
"...the opposition Democratic Party, which has a majority in parliament...."
Got that? "A majority in parliament" is the National Assembly, and the ONLY legislative branch. Two bucks some threat of revealing corruption by an investigation into the executive branch is the motivation. If Biden could have done that here....

Have you ever been to the DMZ? I have...not as a soldier but as a tourist. Spooky and scary doesn’t even begin to describe it. Remember,China would love nothing more than to control the *entire* peninsula...not just the northern half.
