Gov. DeSantis Releases Statement Detailing How He Will Select Marco Rubio's Replacement

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday offered the public details about the process of appointing an individual to fill Sen. Marco Rubio’s Senate seat when he begins his duties as Secretary of State in the second Trump administration.

“Senator Marco Rubio is expected to resign from the Senate to assume duties as Secretary of State when the Trump administration takes power on January 20th, creating a vacancy roughly two months from today,” the Republican governor wrote on X.

“We have already received strong interest from several possible candidates, and we continue to gather names of additional candidates and conduct preliminary vetting,” DeSantis continued.

Possible contenders close to DeSantis include Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, Attorney General Ashley Moody, former Florida House Speaker Jose Oliva and chief of staff James Uthmeier.

Some members of Trump’s inner circle have been pushing for DeSantis to select Lara Trump, the Republican National Committee co-chair who is also Trump’s daughter-in-law. She said in interviews over the weekend that she hadn’t yet spoken to DeSantis but would be “honored” to be considered. (Politico)

“More extensive vetting and candidate interviews will be conducted over the next few weeks, with a selection likely made by the beginning of January,” he said.

“Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results," DeSantis added.

Great for DeSantis to start by laying down his selection criteria. Music to the ears.

Never- or sometimes-Trumpers need not apply.

I’m thinking DeSantis will select himself to take Rubio’s seat.

But, Lara Trump would be good, but then, as a family member of Trump, she would be privy to Trump’s decision-making before the rest of congress. That could be a problem, but, she would still be a good selection to replace Rubio.

Another thing to consider is that, the Hispanic population in Florida needs a thank-you from DeSantis and Trump, so, selecting a Hispanic would keep them in the red side and could bring even more Hispanics into the GOP fold and cement that community as republican.

Marco Rubio only resigned from the curent Congressional session. He still has the chance to retain his seat in the next Congressional session.

Rubio did NOT resign from current Congress or next one. Only Gaetz resigned from current Congress (to block the ethics report that he banged a 17 year old).
Rubio won’t resign until he is confirmed. But New Congress gets sworn in Jan 3…Confirmation votes can’t take place before Trump is sworn in at noon on Jan 20. Gaetz can’t get confirmed (and shouldn’t).

Correct, why give up your seat until your confirmed.

I don’t think Rubio will resign until Governor DeSantis is ready to “pull the trigger” on his replacement. The resignation date will be closely coordinated between Rubio and DeSantis. It won’t be an “amateur hour” event.

Lara deserves it. But I wonder if she realizes that the position she currently holds may even be more important than begin president. Because if she had not stepped in then we would probably have president Kamala right now. And in two years the democrats are going to cheat like never before.

Agree. She is a great manager. The RNC has thrived with her leadership. She would be just another Senator if she joins the Senate.

Lara's job was temporary and gone. And, campaign managers' jobs are not more important than the person running and who might eventually end up getting the job. Trump was her boss and those positions can easily be filled by someone else. Lara would still be a good candidate for the senate.

If Gaetz is not confirmed, then yes — put him in the Senate. And watch delightfully as the squishes (including some on this site) howl with pain.

Rubio did not resign. He won’t until he is confirmed. Only Matt Gaetz resigned
(To block report that he banged a 17 year old). Gaetz could theoretically serve in next Congress.
